an interim salmon

High-performance 68020 workstations The latest additions to the Sun-3 family are the Sun3/5OM and 52M. The SOM model is a desktop discless node for a computer network aimed at departments involved in engineering, computer-aided design and computer-aided publishing. The 1.5M instruction/s (MIPS) Sun-3150M combines a 32 bit 68020 microprocessor running at IS MHz, four Mbyte memory, a built in Ethernet transceiver and a disc I/O controller on one board. An optional Motorola 6888 1 floating-point coprocessor is also available for speedier computations. The Sun-3/SOM comes complete with the Sun operating system and has enhancements such as a multiwindow display manager, a network file system for transparent access to files on different networks as well as tools for software development and debugging. alone workstation, the Sun3152M. Designed for users requiring 32 bit functionality but who do not have access to a network, the S2M model is, according to the manufacturers, well suited to OEMs and system integrators or single users who need an interim solution until a networked installation can be justified. The Sun-3152M includes a 71 Mbyte (formatted capacity) disc drive and 60 Mbyte 0.25 in streaming cartridge tape drive along with the same specifications and full software and networking facilities as the Sun-3150M. List price for the Sun-3i50M is &7400 and for the’ 52M model &12950. Both products are available worldwide. (Sun Microsystems Inc., 2550 Garcia Ave, Mountain View CA 94043, USA. Tel: (41.5) 960 1300. Projecttrackingtool for IBM compatibles A US company has developed an IBM PC compatible project tracking tool called Project Earned Analysis Value (PEVA). This database allows engineers and managers to gather insight into the health and status of complex projects. Within PEVA, earned value and man hour effectiveness indicators tell how many hours have been earned toward the completion of individual tasks based on the efficiency of the project team. It also indicates with a percentage figure, where the project actually is concerning the original plan as well as analysing many sepa-

rate aspects of the project to determine absolute status. If a project coordinator or manager uses PEVA he/she can determine if the time their people are spending on project-related tasks is meeting The original expectations. manager will be able, according to the developers, to determine if the project team is more efficient than planned, meeting expectations or less efficient than planned. Prices for the project tracking tool are available on request. (Engineenng Ma~g~nt C~sultants, 84 Minnesota Ave, Troy, MI 48084, USA. Tel: (313) 583 0 1123)
