Obituary
Prof. Marco Marchetti, MD (1931–2007)
Professor Marco Marchetti passed away on September 20, 2007. Marco was the Head of the Institute of Human Physiology in the University of Roma ‘‘La Sapienza”, the director of the postgraduate school of sports medicine for the last 10 years and a leading scientist in human movement, motor control, sports medicine and rehabilitation. A native of Carrara, a Tuscany town famous for its white marble and compassionate people, he applied his compassion and love for the human movement field to motivate several generations of his students to master, excel and enjoy a lifetime of research and practice in this field. An excellent teacher and mentor who attracted the best students and medical doctors in Italy to careers in sports medicine and rehabilitation teaching and research. Marco was trained as a medical doctor but chose an academic track where he was free to pioneer many areas of research including human locomotion, energetic of handicapped in wheel-chairs, lower extremity amputees and paraplegic locomotion with the LSU-RGO and muscle stimulation. This, he realized, merged his medical educadoi:10.1016/j.jelekin.2007.11.008
tion with his brilliant attitude toward mathematics and mechanics. He was one of the first scientists that explored the mechano-myogram and regularly collaborated with the affiliated major clinical facility. His experience in the difficulties of ambulation of the handicapped drove him to set national standards that were adopted by the government and elicited the elimination of architectural barriers for the access of the handicapped to public and historical buildings. An enthusiastic sailor, he cruised regularly the waters of the Mediterranean – and of the Pacific Ocean as well – in his sailboat and recently became interested in the biomechanics of sailing while cruising with and testing his students and associates. Marco had many friends around the world and for them Italy without Marco is the same as Roma without the Fontana di Trevi.
