OBITUARY PROFESSOR MICHAEL SMIALOWSKI

IT IS WITH great sadness that I inform readers of the death in Columbus, Ohio of Professor Michael Smialowski in N o v e m b e r . He had a most distinguished career in the Polish A c a d e m y of Sciences in Warsaw during which time he established a world wide reputation for his work on Hydrogen in Metals on which he published a book in 1952 which for many years was the standard reference on the subject. After his retirement he emigrated with his wife, Professor Susan Szlarska-Smialowska, to Columbus, Ohio upon her appointment to a Chair in the Fontana Corrosion Centre. H e continued to be active in his retirement and was one of three editors of a major book on Hydrogen Degradation of Ferrous Alloys. I had the pleasure of meeting him on several occasions. I have happy memories of a courteous, intellectual, hospitable, witty man. At this time our sympathies lie with his widow. We all extend our heartfelt condolences to her. JOHN SCUI.I.Y
