The contents of this book are as follows: Monitoring ground movements ad0acent to an excavation in downtown Chicago, by R.G.Lukas and D.E.Anderson; 2.Monitoring of two braced excavations in Chicago, by A.Cunningham and L.D.Carpenter; 3.Instrumentation of a 50-ft(15.2-m) deep braced excavation, by G.E.Bauer; 4.Measurement of strut loads by means of vibrating-wire strain gauges, by T.D.O'Rourke and E.J.Cording; 5 .Performance of tied-back excavation at Water Tower Place, by J.Gnaedinger, S.A.Gill and P.A.Keim; 6.Excavation and soldier pile - Tremie concrete (SPTC) wall instr~mentatlon and monitoring program, by R.E.Brown; 7.Monitoring consolidation settlements of soft soils induced by dewatering, by A.Partos and R.M.Koerner; 8.Modified mat foundation design over soft clay, by C.N.Baker,Jr. and F.P.Wiesinger; 9.Soll strain measUrement using inductance coll method, by E.T.Sellg; lO.Instrumentatlon of large buried culverts, by E.T.Selig; and ll.Statie and dynamic strain measurements for embankments, by R.J.Dietrieh and J.R.Salley. 1510 FECKER, E GOTZ,HP SAUER, G Leopold Muller 65th anniversary publication. Textbook. Figs,Tab is,Ref s. UN IV. KARLSRUHE, GERMANY, 1974, 269P. The book contains twenty papers by different authors on various topics in geomechanics. All but three of the papers are in German, with an English abstract, the remaining three being in ~glish. A tribute to Leopold Muller forms the introduction to the book and is followed by a comprehensive bibliography of Muller's published work.

These values were used in the earthquake resistant design of foundations of nuclear power stations and of rock fill dams. 1512 PIKE,DC The drying properties of flint gravels. ENGNG DIV. ,ASCE,VIO!, GTS, AUG .1975, P801-821. Results are presented of extensive field and laboratory tests on soils from two old hydraulic fill dams that were damaged during the February 9, 1971 San Fernando earthquake. The data include standard penetration, absolute and relative compaction, relative density, static strength, and cyclic triaxial test results for both the hydraulic fill silty sand and the natural silty and gravelly sand alluvium. The relative densities of the hydraulic fills ranged from about 51%-58% and the relative compaction ranged from about 85%-92% of Modified AASHO maxfu~im density. The relative density of the allu_ vium was about 65%-70%. Other properties were consistent with previously published data from other similsr soils at similar densities. Auth. 1514 GANEV, IC INST.
