A variational principle is introduced in which the Euler equations are the theoretical three-dimensional equations of consolidation in fully saturated and heterogemecus poro-elastic media with the fundamental consideration by Sandhu and Wilson. A finite element method is then used in both the space and time domains to develop a practical solution technique. In order to discuss the various ~roblems and difficulties in applying this numerical method to the practical design of foundation settlements, the results of the analyses are compared with the observations on the Aiko test embankment for the conStruction of the Tomei Expressway. The calculated settl~nents and pore water pressure fields agree well with the measurements when the permeability coefficient can be predicted accurately, except the parts where plastic settlements occur. 1400 BOZOZUK,M Mud creek bridge foundation moven~mts. 5F,hR. A 122m long, five-span concrete bridge over Mud Creek, supported on end bearing steel piles, was instrumemted to measure horizontal movements of its foundations. Fifteen years of observations show that the abutments and piers have moved downslope end rocked back and forth through a small vertical angle about their bases. The net convergence of the abutments is about 4cm. The horizontal movements were cs~sed by soll creep in the mar. ine clams of the steep valley slopes. The change in verticality of the piers was attributed to the expansion and contraction of the bridge deck due to seasonal temperature variations. (30cm) diameter precast concrete piles driven through 60ft (18m) of sensitive marine clay followed by 1Oft (3m) of silt and sand and 13ft (hm) of very dense silt to end bearing in glacial till. The purpose of the test was to study the drivability of the piles through very dense soll and to measure the disturbance caused to the sensitive clay by the driving of displacement piles. Following a literature review, the paper presents the soil conditions at the site and the testing program. The test results are discussed and experience gained from the follow-up of the driving of 520 piles at the site is presented.
