Ptfe membrane tests

Following a management and staff buyout, BHRA The Fluid Engineering Centre (British Hydromechanics Research Association) has changed its corporate status. Now called BHR Group Ltd, the transition to private sector technology group is the first of its kind for a research association. The new company is owned in the proportion: 83% management and 17% staff. It will continue as an independent research and technology organisation, providing the same service that BHRA has for 42 years. At the point of change in corporate status, the research association had a staff of 175 and an annual turnover of around f6m. Turnover this year is expected to be f7.5m. The organisation’s 300 mem-

A research contract has been awarded to Mupor by the MOD to investigate the relationship between pore structure, water vapour permeability and liquid resistance of microporous membranes based on ptfe. This short term contract is part of the MOD small firms research initiative and is intended to assist in the characterisation of the Mupor membrane for application in specialist military garments. The contract will be used to finance certain equipment and testing of the materials in conjunction with and, RMCS at Shrivenham, it is expected that the membrane performance can be optimised. Filtech 91 returns to Karlsruhe More than 80% of the 84 firms who participated at Filtech in 1989 at Karlsruhe, West Germany, have stated they want to return again in 1991 to the same venue. Filtech Europa 91, will therefore also take place in the Karlsruhe Congress and Exhibition Centre, from October 15-l 7 1991. The international interest in the subject of filtration and separation is exemplified by the fact that exhibitors came from as far away as Japan and the USA, and further emphasised by visitors attending

bers accounted for 1.5% of this turnover through subscriptions, with 15% from government contracts and the remainder from industrial contract R&D and consultancy. Exports stand at 30% of turnover, two-thirds to Europe.

from 37 countries in all five continents. In the future, West Germany, through East Germany, will prove an ideal place to make contact with the eastern bloc countries, many of which have serious environmental pollution problems which could be helped considerably with the filtration equipment and services that will be at Filtech. In 1991 the organiser will be able to use not only the ground-floor exhibition area in the beautifully modernised former Stadthalle in Karlsruhe, but further space has been made available on the lower ground level which sur-

rounds the two Congress halls. This will enable more than lOO+ exhibitors to be accommodated. Once again the Filtration Society will organise a threeday Congress to be held in conjunction with Filtech. The languages of the Congress will be English and German. Situated in BadenWurttemberg, Germany’s wealthiest region, Karlsruhe occupies an important position in central Europe and is easily accessible by road, rail and air (through Frankfurt and Stuttgart) from all over the world. It is particularly important to British firms as the* British

They are said to fit readily into existing housings, are made of 100% polypropylene for wide chemical comand employ a patibility, pleating technology in their construction, in which pleats run radially as well as horizontally so that a greater surface area is created for trapping

dirt particles. This patented technology is known as CRP compound radial pleating. This design is said to provide lower resistance to flow, leading to fewer change-outs, long life, and reduced labour and disposal costs. The ‘300’ cartridges are available in standard sizes of 10, 20 and 30in, with 8.7, 18.0 and 27.42ft of filter area respectively, said to be 60% greater than usual due to the pleating design. The ‘700’ units are available in 14 and 28in lengths suitable for 7in diameter filter bag housings, with 42 and lOOft* of filter surface area (illustrated). The cartridges may be used for clarification (1 40 microns) across a wide range of industries and applications. Filtration Products Group, 3M United Kingdom p/c, 3M House. Consulate-General, closed in 1985, will be re-opened later this year because of the enormous potential for companies in this area. Since December 1989 Karlsruhe has been the headquarters of the International Congress Academy. Formed by the German association for the promotion and development of seminars and conferences and the Karlsruhe congress and exhibition company, this organisation seeks to promote scientific research, technology and training through the medium of meetings, exhibitions, etc, by co-operating with other international scientific institutions. Exports develop A second contract has been won by B & M Longworth in China to build a cleaning technology plant for high performance filters used in the manufacture of polyester film. In addition, the first order has just been signed with a leading man-made textile fibre producer in the UK for one of the company’s new generation processes. The plant for China will be shipped from the UK in September for installation by Longworth early 1991. Further orders are anticipated from Italy, Indonesia, Taiwan and Korea, and, possibly, the American market. 8 & M Langworth (Edgworth) Ltd, Unit 18. Glenfield Park, Phillips Road, Blackburn B615Pf.
