Design and Thermal Performance: Below-Ground Dwellings in China. Gideon S. Golany. 1990. University of Delaware Press. 163 pp. $US39.50. In China today, 30 to 40 million people live in dwellings below ground. The author shows how Chinese below-ground dwellings provide a comfortable ambient environment, along with low construction costs. Two types of earth-sheltered dwellings have delveloped in China: the pit habitat, constituting a deep aptio open to the sky and usually surrounded by eight articulated, vaulted rooms; and the cliff dwelling, constructed with a wide terrace formed by earth excavated from the rooms dug into the cliffside. The cliff-type dwellings use land that is not usually suitable for agriculture. This book is the product of a field survey analysis of the correlation between the form and design of six cliff-type and six pit-type belowground dwellings, and how the thermal performance of the soil affects them. These twelve case studies represent different geographical and cultural environments. The book focuses on the design, evolution, and configuration of Chinese below-ground dwellings and the process of heat gain and loss correlated with this design. A prime theme of the book is to introduce the vernacular experience in this field to the designer of modern below-ground space. The FIDIC Digest: Contractual Claims and Responsibilities under the FIDIC Conditions F o u r t h Edition. John G. Sawyer and C. Arthur Gillott. 1990. Thomas Telford. 304 pp. £38.00. For any major civil engineering project in any location to prove successful, it should be governed by the terms and conditions of contract

agreed by the two main parties concerned--the Employer and the Contractor. Such terms and conditions must be fully understood by all those involved in the project. This digest provides a clear explanation of the new fourth edition of the FIDIC (Fbd~ration Internationale des Ing~uieurs Conseils) Conditions of Contract for Civil Engineering Construction, Fourth Edition, and of the impact of the changes and innovations of the third edition. The book is divided into the following sections: Considerations, relationships and schedules ofrespensibilities: Changes between third and fourth editions of the FIDIC Conditions; Examination of certain selected clauses and a review of special circllm~tances; Claims--the basis of claims and their processing; "Charts'--a diagrammatic layout of selected clauses; Arbitration and disputes; Index of the various clauses referred to in the Digest; Conclusion. Mining Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. 23 pp. This publication provides abstracts of papers presented at the "Mining Geomechauics '89" conference held 21-23 November, 1989, in Ostrava. A report on the general conclusions to be drawn from the confernce is followed by abstracts, which are categorized according to the three conference sessions: Geomechanical monitoring; Numerical methods in geomechanics; and Water-jet cutting. Rail M a s s Transit Systems for Developing Countries. 1990. Thomas Telford Ltd. 352 pp. £56.00. In English and French. M a n y developing countries are building metro systems that have encouraged economic growth in city centers, but which are proving enormously costly. This book forms a study of the arguments for and against metros, based on analyses of the advantages and problems encoutered in several citiesthroughout the world. The authors consider how to overcome some of the difficulties, recognizing the crucialeconomic role of railmass transit systems in large cities. The book includes contributions from several countries. Contents include sectionson: Road mass transitin developing cities--the Transport and Road Reserach Laboratory study; The international dimension of valuing metros in developing countries; Case studies: the viability of metros (Hong Kong, Manila, S~o Paulo); Case studies: planning and implementation (Cairo, Calcutta); Case studies: integration (Tunis, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago); and Financing policy.
