TOPIC: ARRONAX CYCLOTRON INVITED CONFERENCE Radiation safety at ARRONAX N. VARMENOT Medical Physics Department, ICO Centre Rene´ Gaucheau, Nantes - Saint-Herblain, GIP ARRONAX, 1 rue Aronnax, CS 10112, Nantes Saint-Herblain

Cyclotron ARRONAX is a cyclotron for research and production dedicated to research in nuclear medicine and radiochemistry. Its installation is subjected to the public health code and has a license from the Nuclear Safety Authority as a supplier of radioactive material. The IBA C70 model is a prototype able to produce beams of alpha particles, protons and deuterons with energies and maximum intensities of 70 MeV and 750 mA, respectively. At this energy level, the phenomena of activation of the matter are important. That implies a particularly meticulous management of all that

relates to the maintenance of the cyclotron and its equipment as well as gas and liquid effluents, potentially contaminated. On the other hand, because of its multiple missions, from production to research by adding education and training, the induced co-activity, the diversity and the number of the workers, oblige to an increased vigilance for the risk analysis of and the management and follow-up of the personnel. Cyclotron ARRONAX is an exceptional tool which requires therefore an exceptional system of prevention of the risks and in particular of radiation safety, within the interest of people and the environment.

TOPIC: CYCLOTRON ARRONAX INVITED CONFERENCE Production of innovative radionuclides at ARRONAX F. HADDAD Cyclotron Arronax, Subatech, Nantes

ARRONAX, acronym for "Accelerator for Research in Radiochemistry and Oncology at Nantes Atlantique", is a high energy and high intensity multi-particle cyclotron located in Nantes (France). This machine can accelerate protons from 30 MeV up to 70 MeV, deuterons from 15 MeV up to 35 MeV and alpha particles at a fix 68 MeV. Intensity as high as 750 mAe can be obtained for protons when working on a dual beam mode (2 extracted beam at the same time). ARRONAX has 6 experimental vaults among which four are connected to hot cells through a rabbit system and are devoted to radionuclide production. ARRONAX has turned into operation in March 2010 and has become fully operational in October 2010. Most part of the beam time is devoted to the radionuclide production for nuclear medicine, the

other part being used to perform radiolysis, radiobiology and physics studies especially with a pulsed alpha beam. A priority list based on the capability of the machine has been set under the supervision of an international scientific committee. In defining this list, a particular attention has been paid to dosimetry by promoting b+/b- couples of radionuclide. The priority list contains isotopes for therapeutic use (67Cu, 47Sc and 211At) and for imaging (82Sr/82Rb and 68Ge/68Ga generators and 64Cu, 44Sc). After a short description of the ARRONAX facility, the talk will present all the steps of a production on ARRONAX from target preparation to delivery to the end user with the Strontium- 82 used as an example.
