MALE AND FEMALE SEXUAL FUNCTION AND DYSFUNCTION; ANDROLOGY
was true for individuals who after biopsy had asymptomatic urinary tract infections as well as those who were symptomatic. This result suggests that fosfomycin could potentially be an alternative medication for men undergoing prostate biopsy. One of the strongest benefits of fluoroquinolones and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole are their high urine and prostate penetration. Few data exist on the ability of fosfomycin to be concentrated in an uninfected prostate. At our institution based on data from Taylor et al,1 we perform rectal swabs in all patients undergoing prostate biopsy. If an individual has quinolone resistant Escherichia coli, we use fosfomycin in our treatment protocol, as indicated. Edward M. Schaeffer, MD 1. Abstract available at http://jurology.com/ Editorial Comment: This topic continues to surface, as radical prostatectomy remains in the limelight. These data are helpful in understanding the changes in penile length following prostatectomy. Interestingly, stretched flaccid penile length decreases at 2 months but returns to baseline at 6 months. Furthermore, it seems that daily use of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors should be considered early in the post-prostatectomy period. Allen D. Seftel, MD

Abstract available at http://jurology.com/ Editorial Comment: There have been previous reports on this topic that demonstrate a variety of results. The data in this study are reassuring in that all the men returned to normal baseline sexual function at 3 months after biopsy. The authors took a mean of 28 biopsies via the saturation technique. Importantly all the men in this study had normal erectile function before biopsy, which narrows these results to this select group. Allen D. Seftel, MD
