similar to total output in 2000 due to :he strong activity recorded in 4Q 2001. Total blow moulding production in 2002 s projected to grow by 7%. Statistics z~ythe American Plastic Council show :hat consumption of low-density 3olyethylene for bottles rose by 20%, Nhile polypropylene bottle production ‘ose by 15%. PVC consumption by JottIe makers increased by 20%. However, the three segments accounted for only 15% of the nonPET blow moulded PET market. Highdensity polyethylene bottles accounted for the remaining 85%. ~ ~~_.._._ .______.

Advanced Plastic Compounds Co (APC) is to establish a wholly-owned subsidia~ to produce and sell resin compounds, mainly PVC, for use in construction materials, electric cable and vehicles. The company will be headquartered in Suzhou, China, and a 5000 tonnes/y plant is expected to start up in Jan 2003. modern Plastics International, Mar 2002, 32 (3), 44 ..~ ~.~_____. .____________ Japan Chemical Week, 7 Mar 2002.43

Chemplast Sanmar plans to increase capacity Chennai-based Chemplast Sanmar proposes to increase its existing PVC resins capacity by setting up a 170,000 tonnes greenfield plant at Cuddalore. The company is negotiating with IDBI, IFC and a German financial institution, DEG, for financing the project, which is likely to be commissioned in 2004. Chemplast Sanmar’s profits would be affected for 2H 2001-2002 as the company reduced the price of PVC resin by Rup 3000/tonnes following reduced global prices. Indian demand and supply of PVC resins is in balance at 700,000 tonnes and is growing at 8%~~. -~ ~~_.

Indian government to formulate packaging guidelines The Government of India is working to introduce guidelines for packaging drugs and pharmaceuticals based on rationalisation of selection, usage requirement, and cost of the packaging materials used. NIPER under the guidance of NPPA will study the problems put forth by the indust~. NIPER is willing to support the industry, if the industry is willing to implement technology upgradation to guarantee quality and introduce holograms to avoid spurious drugs in the market. The study estimates the loss with primary packaging material for blister packs at 5% in the case of PVCIPVDC; 5.3% for printed aiuminium foil; around 4.68% for duplex cartons; and minus 5.06% for corrugated boxes. Hydro Polymers has expanded its medical compounding facility at a cost of e 3.2M. The expansion includes the production of PVC medical grades with improved pellet geometry and more consistent quality. The company offers gamma irradiation-resistant (GIR) products that provide high colour stability during irradiation sterilisation, as well as superior elastomeric recovery extrusion grades for peristaltic pump tubing, non-DOP

compounds and frosted, semi-opaque materials. .-_ -. European Plastics News, Mar 2002, 29 (3), 32

Medical devices: injection without the needle Rosch AG Medizinte~hnik of Berlin, Germany, has utilised Bayer’s Makrolon RX 2530 polycarbonate in making needle-free injections. Liquid drugs can now be injected almost painlessly through a method that uses a short burst of high pressure. Significant potential exists, with several billion insulin injections being given annually to diabetics. The Bayer material offers resistance to very high pressure of up to 300 bar as well as outstanding transparency, which allows patients and doctors to know how much of the drug has been given and whether the injection has been completed. Bayer is also offering Makrolon RX1805 resin for medical uses. The resin provides improved bonding with PVC tubing and aids in reducing cracking in high-stress medical device applications. Other uses include tubing, luers, Y-site medication ports, stopcocks and other similar applications. _______. European Plastics News, Mar 2002, 29 (3), 32

Processors taking hold of railing market The popularity of plastics and composites as materials for decking has generated a new market for these materials as customers want matching railing to go with their decking. TimberTech Ltd and Owens Corning have already developed new railing systems. Owns Cornings’ railing is made from coextruded acrylic capped fibre glass and polyvinyl chloride components. Alside Inc has announced plans to introduce new machinery for making railing and Outdoor Technologies lnc has adapted its units in Macon, MS and Reno, NV for polyvinyl chloride guard rail production. The company expects the market for polyvinyl chloride railing to grow by 1520% in 2002 (compared with 8% in 2001) and by end Mar 2002 is to install another production line. Railing manufacturers use a variety of materials including acrylic capstocks, glass-reinforced 5
