REQUIREMENTS

FOR SWIFF PUBLICATION

Submission: Contributions must be written in English. They should be submitted in triplicate with original drawings of the figures (no larger t h a n ca. 2 0 × 3 0 cm) a n d a n abstract in English. All manuscripts, o t h e r than Letters, originating in G e r m a n y a n d Austria, should be submitted to the Regional E d i t o r in G e r m a n y . All manuscripts, o t h e r t h a n Letters, originating in E u r o p e a n Countries, o t h e r than those m e n t i o n e d above, as well as those originating in Africa, should be submitted to the R e g i o n a l Editor in the UK. All manuscripts, o t h e r than Letters, originating in J a p a n , should be submitted to the Regional Editor in J a p a n . All m a n u s c r i p t s originating in N o r t h a n d South A m e r i c a , in Asia (except Japan), in A u s t r a l i a or New Z e a l a n d , should be submitted to the Editor. All Surface Science Letters regardless of country of origin, should be submitted directly to the Editor. Refereeing: The authors are encouraged to list the names (addresses and telephone numbers) o f three to four individuals who are qualified to serve as referees for their paper. T h e p r o p o s e d referees should preferably reside in the same country or continent as the Editor or Regional Editor to w h o m the p a p e r is submitted. T h e referees selected will not necessarily be from the list suggested by the author. Failure to provide complete d a t a o n several suggested referees may delay processing of the manuscript. Copyright transfer: The submission of a p a p e r will be taken to imply that the a u t h o r has satisfied himself that no copyright will thereby be infringed. U p o n a c c e p t a n c e of an article by this journal the author(s) will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the Publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. Publication speed: To qualify for rapid publication in Surface Science Letters manuscripts should not exceed 2000 w o r d s in length, excluding abstract, list of references a n d a m a x i m u m of 5 tables or figures which will be c o u n t e d as separate. Preparation of manuscripts: The following are the stylistic r e q u i r e m e n t s for a manuscript. (1) Manuscripts should be typed t h r o u g h o u t with double line spacing a n d wide margins on n u m b e r e d pages. (2)

Title page(s) should contain, in addition to the article title, author(s)' n a m e s a n d affiliations, the text of related footnotes a n d the text of the abstract. Indicate which a u t h o r will act as contact a u t h o r a n d provide F A X No., telephone No. a n d telex No., if available. Failure to be able to contact the a u t h o r by F A X can result in significant delays in processing the manuscript.

(3)

Tables should be typed on s e p a r a t e sheets at the end of the manuscript. In addition to its serial number, e a c h table should have a sufficiently detailed h e a d i n g or caption to explain the d a t a displayed in it.

(4)

Figures should be n u m b e r e d a n d their captions listed t o g e t h e r at the end of the manuscript. E a c h figure should have a sufficiently detailed caption explaining the d a t a displayed, A set of g o o d quality drawings a n d p h o t o g r a p h s is required to p r o d u c e the printed line figures a n d half-tone plates in the journal. P h o t o g r a p h i c copies ("glossy prints") of drawings are also acceptable for the line figures if they have b e e n sharply focused a n d evenly exposed. As a rule, Xerox copies cannot be accepted. Original drawings a n d p h o t o g r a p h s will be r e t u r n e d after publication of the paper. Line figures: The drawings or glossy prints supplied for the line figures should be 1.5-3 times larger t h a n the printed size of the figures a n d should contain all the required, carefully applied lettering. Figures are preferably r e d u c e d to a single column width (7.6 cm) unless their complexity, large width-to-height ratio, or n e e d to display special detail m a k e s a larger format necessary (max. printed width ~ 20 cm). I n a p p r o p r i a t e l y sized lettering on a figure may prevent its reduction to the size o p t i m u m for its information content. T h e lettering used on a d r a w i n g should be chosen so that after reduction, the height of n u m b e r s a n d (capital) letters falls within the range 1.2-2.4 mm. C a r e should be exercised in choosing the pen width of m a c h i n e - p l o t t e d graphs. F r e q u e n t l y lines in these figures are too fine c o m p a r e d to the a r e a of the figure. S h a d e d areas in line figures should be shown by m e a n s of cross-hatching (or a matrix of dots) r a t h e r than a continuous grey " w a s h " . Cross-hatching, after reduction, of density less t h a n ~ 25 l i n e s / c m is satisfactory. Half-tone plates: P h o t o g r a p h s supplied for r e p r o d u c t i o n should be u n m o u n t e d unless they f o r m p a r t of a composite figure a n d they should have a s o m e w h a t g r e a t e r contrast t h a n is desired in the printed figure. It is i m p o r t a n t that the p h o t o g r a p h s supplied are not screened (overprinted with the point-matrix used by printers) or moir6 p a t t e r n s will form w h e n they are screened for a second time. W h e n necessary, the top side of a p h o t o g r a p h should be m a r k e d on the back. A reduction factor should be r e c o m m e n d e d for a p h o t o w h e n it is not obvious w h a t detail in the p h o t o is of interest. Colour plates: Illustrations can be printed in colour when they are j u d g e d by the Editor to be essential to the presentation. T h e Publisher a n d the a u t h o r will e a c h b e a r part of the extra costs involved. F u r t h e r information c o n c e r n i n g colour illustrations a n d the costs to the a u t h o r can be o b t a i n e d f r o m the Publisher.

References in the text to o t h e r publications should be n u m b e r e d consecutively within square brackets, for example: " . . . a n d C h a n g a n d W e a v e r [1] show . . . " a n d listed t o g e t h e r at the end of the text, for example: [1] S.-C. C h a n g a n d M.J. Weaver, Surf. Sci. 241 (1991) 11. [2] S.J. Hoekje a n d G.B. Hoflund, Appl. Surf. Sci. 47 (1991) 43. R e f e r e n c e s to u n p u b l i s h e d or not readily accessible reports should be avoided. In the case of multiple a u t h o r s h i p all a u t h o r s should be listed in the references provided they n u m b e r less than ten. Only in the case of more than ten a u t h o r s is the first a u t h o r et al. acceptable.

Formulae in the m a n u s c r i p t should be typed with p a r t i c u l a r consideration given to c h a r a c t e r s that may be misinterpreted, e.g. I (cap.), l (el), 1 (one), ' (prime) c, C; k, K, K (kappa); p, P, p (rho) o (lower case), O (cap.), 0 (zero), ° (deg) u, v (lower case), u (nu), V (cap.) × (times), x (lower case), X (cap.) Z (sigma), Y~ (sum), H (pi), FI (product); etc. If necessary, unusual symbols should be explained in pencil in the margin.

Vectors should be indicated by a wavy underlining, a n d will be printed in bold-face italics.

Delay in publication might occur i f the above requirements are not met. Submission of electronic text: The final text may be submitted o n a 3.5" or 5.25" diskette (in addition to a hard copy with original figures). Both double density a n d high density diskettes are acceptable, but they should be f o r m a t t e d according to their capacity before the files are copied onto them. The main text, list of reference, tables a n d figure legends should be stored in s e p a r a t e text files with clearly identifiable file names. T h e format of these files d e p e n d s on the w o r d p r o c e s s o r used. It is essential that the n a m e a n d version of the w o r d p r o c e s s i n g p r o g r a m , type of c o m p u t e r on which the text was p r e p a r e d , a n d format of the text files are clearly indicated. T h e final m a n u s c r i p t may contain p a r t s (e.g., formulae, complex tables) or last minute corrections which are not included in the electronic text. This should be clearly m a r k e d in the additional h a r d copy. Page charge and reprints: T h e r e is no p a g e charge. Reprints may be o r d e r e d from the publisher. A n o r d e r form will be sent to contributors t o g e t h e r with the proofs. 50 reprints of the article will be supplied free of charge.
