Reviewer of the month e December 2013: Mr Benjamin Perakath, MS, FRCS(G) Mr. Perakath is currently Head, Division of Surgery, Head, Department of Surgery and Head, Department of Surgery Unit 2 at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India. Mr. Perakath has worked tirelessly to put colorectal surgery in India on the map as a specialty. He has headed an almost exclusive colorectal unit since 2003, the first in an academic institution in India. He lectures frequently across India on colorectal issues and his department offers a two year Fellowship course in colorectal surgery. The specialty is slowly gaining recognition in its own right, in a country where ‘GI Surgery’ is recognised as a specialty. His work in colorectal surgery encompasses benign as well as a heavy load of malignant disease, and of late 70% the unit’s work is done laparoscopically, even in a resource poor country where patients pay for treatment.
