Membranesfor cell processing Asymmetric microfiltration membranes designed for tangential-flow filtration have been developed by Filtron with 0.16 and 0.3 pm pore sizes, and are suitable for continuous cell processing applications. Unlike conventional microporous membranes that are prone to irreversible plugging, these feature a smooth surface that minimises fouling from cell entrapment, which is a primary factor of flow-rate decay. As a result, cleaning of the membrane is simplified, and reproducible flow rates after cleaning can be achieved.
Also, the asymmetric interstitial pore structure prevents folding beneath the surface, where further plugging occurs in conventional symmetric microporous membranes. The 0.16 and 0.3 pm membranes are an addition to Filtron’s Omega series cassette line, and possess the same superior low-binding properties to maximise product recoveries and provide rapid flow rates. FILTER HARDWARE
Ausimontfluoropolymermelt-blownfibre Ausimont, a specialist in fluoropolymer technology, has announced Halar MBF, a melt-blown fibre for use as a filter medium in the chemical processing industry and other sectors which require filtration in hostile environments. Halar MBF is derived from Halar ECTFE, and has a broad operating temperature range (from cryogenic temperatures to 175°C). It resists corrosive substances and organic solvents, including strong acids, chlorine and aqueous caustic. Moreover, it retains its useful properties even after exposure to 200 mrad of cobalt-
60 radiation. In a joint study carried out by Ausimont and the Textiles L Nonwovens Development Centre at the University of Tennessee, Dr L Wadsworth found that Halar MBF webs demonstrated a filter efficiency of 90 - 92%. When calendered, the efficiency of the webs increased to 98%.

RobustHastelloymeshproducts In response to increasing demand from the chemical and process industries for products capable of withstanding extremely aggressive operating conditions, G Bopp & Co, the specialist in manufacture of precision woven stainless-steel cloths, has introduced a new range of high-performance meshes produced in Hastelloy. Even the highest-quality stainless-steel used in these demanding industries may be affected by intergranular corrosion, which causes them to become brittle, and leads to eventual disintegration. Developed to facilitate the introduction of more costso6
effective maintenance programmes, the resilient Hastelloy products are available in rolls or made up into customer-specific products by the company’s established fabrications division. G Bopp & Co is now holding stocks of 25 pm aperture Hastelloy meshes, manufactured to DIN 2-4819 (C-276) standard. F’roducta available range from 25 pm to 2 mm aperture sizes, and may be sintered to achieve greater physical strengths for specific applications.
