FOCUS The business operations will be integrated with Ecolab’s existing Brazil Institutional business. No further details were disclosed. According to Ecolab, the acquisition will increase its service capacity and scale, improve customer coverage, and strengthen customer relationships and opportunities for its fast-growing Brazilian Institutional business. In other news, Exelerate ZTF, Ecolab’s patent-pending cleaning solution that dissolves low trans fat oil residue from processing equipment and surfaces, is now available to food manufacturers throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Exelerate ZTF’s thixotropic gel technology clings to equipment and surfaces to help dissolve low trans fat soils, making it easier to remove soils in hard-to-reach areas, including fryer hood vents, walls, ceilings and plant catwalks, the company says. Since its launch in North America [Focus on Surfactants, Mar 2010], Exelerate ZTF has garnered recognition in the food and beverage industry, earning the IFT Food Expo Innovation Award. Two new ways to clean up Two research findings have indicated new possible ways to help clean up oils spills. One involves adding a magnetic surfactant to the oil to form micelles. Since these micelles are magnetic, they allow a magnetic field to pull both the surfactant and the oil out of the water. The magnetic surfactant, developed by researchers at the University of Bristol, UK, is an ionic liquid produced by mixing iron trihalide with surfactants containing chloride and bromide ions. The other method demonstrates the advantages of shining light on the oil spills. VeruTEK Technologies and scientists from the University of Connecticut discovered that light helps in both the formation of smaller micelles and the discharge of metals from the oil. Various analytical techniques were utilized to monitor what happens when a mixture of salt water, crude oil and VeruTEK’s VeruSOL Marine 200 was exposed to visible and UV light. By promoting oxidation reactions, it turned the oil into degradable compounds and considerably 6

Health BASF introduces extended solubilization and dermatology excipients portfolios After acquiring Cognis in 2011, BASF has significantly expanded its range of solubilization and dermatology excipients. The new portfolios were launched on 1 Apr 2012 offering a wide range of innovative pharmaceuticalgrade solubilizers, emulsifiers, solvents, consistency factors and emollients for all dosage forms. To make the portfolios easier to navigate, BASF has developed a new naming system for these products. The new names are related to compendial designations – so customers can easily identify each excipient’s application. All products within these portfolios now have ‘Kolli’ as the stem, plus a suffix reflecting the chemical structure: for solubilizers and emulsifiers the suffix is ‘phor’. BASF has made great strides in regards to solubilization and bioavailability enhancement in recent years, developing innovative solutions for even the toughest solubilization challenges.
