SHIP-NEW

CREW!

This issue of the Journal witnesses the passing of the editorial torch. Over the past six years, the ship of the American Journal of Gastroenterology has moved under the dedicated and expert guidance of its skipper, Rowen K. Zetterman, into the high seas of the gastrointestinal literature where it now sails with pride and confidence with the very elite of the fleet. The success of the Journal under Rowen’s editorship has been truly remarkable-he has effectively brought the Journal to a position as a premier journal of clinical gastroenterology. Though I kndw that he would immediately rush to thank the many, many reviewers who have given of their time and expertise over these years and would add a special note of gratitude for his editorial board, assistant, associate, and special section editors, the lion’s share of the accolades must be given to Rowen and to the editorial office in Omaha where he has been most ably assisted by our senior editorial assistant, Linda Hansen. We all owe them an immense debt of gratitude. A new crew now takes over. Will they rock the boat or, indeed, sink the ship? Our readers will be fully reassured to know that the overall format of the Journal will remain unchanged and will be based as before on clinical reviews, editorials, original research reports, full-length case reports, brief case reports, and correspondence. World literature review will continue under the guidance of David A. Johnson, and Rowen K. Zetterman has agreed to continue as Book Review Editor. To help me tackle the ever increasing volume of submissions in areas well beyond the bounds of my personal expertise, I have appointed six associate editors who will be primarily responsible for manuscripts in their areas. Bruce R. Bacon, John Baillie, M. Brian Fennerty, Peter Kahrilas, Bret A. Lashner and Dawn Provenzale have

agreed to serve as associate editors. I believe that the commitment and stature of these individuals will attract the very finest original contributions in clinical research and foster the highest standards of peer review. This must remain a primary focus of the Journal. Mindful of our readership, we must continue to strive to act as the forum for new ideas and debate in clinical gastroenterology and hepatology. One new feature you will notice in forthcoming issues is a section entitled “What’s New in GI.” The practicing clinician is confronted by an ever increasing number and diversity of journals which publish new information which may, either right now or in the future, prove relevant to their clinical practice. In an attempt to provide some‘insight into what is going on in gastroenterology and hepatology in the broadest sense, we plan to add this new section which will be just two pages in length and which will include several brief “snappy” resumes of truly “hot” articles from basic science, radiology, pathology, surgery, and pediatric gastroenterology, as well as from the various fields of gastroenterology, which may well have some relevance to the practicing clinician. The torch has passed but has not moved far. The greatest bonus of the retention of the editorial office in Omaha is that Linda Hansen will continue with us as senior editorial assistant-we are delighted that she will be with us as we move into this new phase. Finally, it is important that you, the readers, remember that this is your journal-your submissions, comments and criticisms are what keep the Journal alive and help us to move forward. We look forward to serving you over the next several years. Eamonn M. M. Quigley, M.D., F.A.C.G. Editor-in-Chief American Journal of Gastroenterology
