Note from the Editor Scientific Debate Artificial intelligence deals with problems that have been of concern to many fields. The following paper, sent in by Iwasaki and Simon, points out relevant early work on causality in statics, and compares it to the work of de Kleer and Brown. To clarify the issues, I asked de Kleer and Brown to respond to the criticisms. The following two notes extend the dialog. We encourage such analyses; we all benefit from keeping our vision open.
