Strainer for high contamination Schroeder Industries has developed the Automatic Cyclone Strainer (ACS) which has been designed for the intermittent filtration of solid particles from low-viscosity fluids such as surface water, coolant, and process water. The ACS has a flow rate of up to 525 GPM, up to 230 psi, a filtration rating of 200 to 3,000 μm, and is particularly suited to high levels of contamination and large fluctuations in the solid particle content of the untreated water. particles at a high density means that the filter surface area can take a higher load and the filter can be relatively smaller. Back-flushing of the filter or use of cleaning fluids or chemicals is not required with the ACS, and filter elements are cleaned solely by surface flushing with untreated fluids. The ACS provides flexibility by integrating into existing systems in almost any quantity and can be adapted to the required flow rates. www.schroederindustries.com

Single-step process for protein isolation Upfront Chromatography A/S has developed a new process to isolate a high purity protein from whey. The protein, called alphalactalbumin, can now be isolated in a single, highly selective step with columns using the company’s proprietary expanded bed adsorption (EBA) technology. The new process makes it possible to isolate the protein, which is used as a supplement in infant formulas, from the sweet and acid whey derived from side streams of cheese and caseinates production. Alpha-lactalbumin is a protein naturally present in bovine and human milk. The protein is of increasing interest as a supplement for infant formulas in order to bring them as close as possible to the natural human breast milk. This drives the demand for processes that allow isolation of highly pure proteins with no allergenic compounds. Upfront says that the new process brings the level of allergenic proteins in the end-product to an absolute minimum and eliminates any possible contamination with unwanted components such as lipids, carbohydrates, off-taste substances and low-molecular

weight adulterants such as melamine. Alpha-lactalbumin is a biologically active protein and it is therefore a major benefit of EBA that the manufacturing process keeps the molecule fully intact compared to previous techniques. The new process developed by Upfront removes the need for harsh heat treatment or clarification steps, which means that the native structure of the protein is preserved while costs are significantly reduced.

with crude and unclarified feed stocks. Any insoluble substances, which would create significant issues for a classical packed bed adsorption column, simply pass unhindered through the column. EBA therefore does not require any detrimental and expensive pre-treatment of the raw material, which makes the production of alpha-lactalbumin highly specific, efficient and very cost-effective. It can also facilitate the production of further value-added products.

Interstate Custom Die Cut Membranes are manufactured to specification using a proprietary process which produces smoother edges than compression cutting, the company says. Manufactured from PTFE, nonwovens and other materials, they can incorporate intricate shapes, including narrow cross sections and close hole spacing, and can be supplied on rolls, with or without an adhesive backing. The membranes can be produced from a dxf, pdf, or most any drawing file and materials either supplied or specified by the customer. They can range in size from under 1in2 with ±0.005 in tolerances, depending upon material. www.interstatesp.com

Full range of small membrane degassers Membrana has fully commercialised its range of its 0.5 × 1 MicroModule membrane contactors, reportedly the smallest membrane degassers of their kind. The 0.5 × 1 MicroModule is available in two models with different membranes. The first model is used to debubble and remove gasses from low surface tension fluids such as ink, coating solutions, and various solvents, while the second device is used to debubble and degas fluids with similar surface tensions to water. This device is suitable for in-line degassing of water and buffer solutions in laboratory and analytical applications. The contactors have 0.11 ft2 (100 cm2) of membrane area and one device can process up to 30 ml/min of liquid, making them suitable for low flow in-line debubbling applications. Larger contactors are also available for degassing higher liquid flow rates. The MicroModule is an integrally potted membrane contactor that does not utilise any o-rings or external metal clamps.
