Photo-adhesives s t u d i e d Ultra-violet cured adhesives have been the subject of a study carried out at Battelle's Geneva Research Centre. These photo-adhesives can offer substantial benefits both in terms of performance and cost. In many cases they can provide a stronger bond, more rapidly, than that produced by thermally-set adhesives. The work at Battelle-Geneva has been based on photo-adhesives with the following characteristics: • • • • •
cure only in UV light solventless effective in very thin (few#m) layers very high bond strength wide range of viscosities
To date the programme has confirmed the feasibility of using UV laminating on continuous and semi-continuous systems. The development of photosensitive adhesives for a wide variety of applications has been particularly successful, including those for laminating plastic foil onto aluminium foil and for security glass laminates. As a result of the work at Geneva, Battelle is offering its services to industry to help promote the use of photoadhesives. These services include modification of existing formulations for use in unusual assembles or to obtain specific properties; and the development of new adhesives to meet unusual or particular specifications.

Three new refractory cements manufactured by Zurich-based Elosol Chemicals are now available in the UK from Industrial Science Ltd. Called Cerastil, the cements are available in three grades: C3, C10 and GC. Grades C3 and C10 are both single component inorganic, polysilicate-base powders which are mixed with water. They can be used for a wide range of specialised applications, having the properties of resistance to chemicals; high temperature resistance (1000 C for C3, 1500 C for C10); less than 1% .

shrinkage; electrical insulation; high bond strengths; and long shelf life. Grade GC is a specialised bonding compound used in the joining of carbon or graphite. A two-component material, consisting of 99% pure carbon, it thus creates an almost 100% carbonaceous bond of very high strength. It is expected that GC will be of particular interest in the nuclear and aerospace industries in addition to such particular areas as chlorine pot lines, aluminium smelters, etc.

Cole Chemicals of Purley, Surrey has been appointed UK distributor for small lots of Imprez 100 petroleum resin manufactured by ICI Petrochemicals Division. The new arrangement, which came into effect at the end of last year, applies to deliveries of 10 tonnes or less. imprez 100 is used as a tackifier for rubber and hot melt and pressure sensitive adhesives, as well as in such products as thermoplastic road marking compounds, paints and printing inks, and for timber treatment and concrete curing.

Retention of full bond strength at temperatures up to 200°C is claimed for a new Kommerling one-component adhesive, now available from UK suppliers L.B. Chemicals. With a synthetic resin base, the adhesive is designed for bonding pvc to aluminium or steel. It is applied from solvent solution, dried and then cured for lOs at 170-190°C. Further information and samples are available from L.B. Chemicals

Already used as original fittings by many manufacturers of carton packaging equipment, Nordson Jetting Systems can also be fitted in place of existing wheel systems. The advent of new hot melt adhesives and new substrates brought many difficulties with wheel applicators, notably temperature control, volume colume, cleanliness and safety. The Nordson Jetting System is said to overcome these problems and has the additional advantage of being capable of use with a wider range of adhesives and substrates.
Recommended primarily for seriesproduction applications where high output rates can only be achieved by reducing setting-off times, Agomet F300 is a new, quick-hardening two.componen adhesive from Degussa. The materijl has a hardening time of about 2 minutes and achieves full strength in about 2 hours. It can be used with metals, alloys, ferrites, plastics, phenolicresin impregnated paper, woods, and cellulose-based materials. Extensive surface pre-treatment is not required, since the adhesive is capable of integrating ordinary rolling or drawing oil residues without difficulty.
