Chapter 14 SOLUBILITY PARAMETER AND LIQUID VOLUME -INORGANIC COMPOUNDS Carl L. Yaws and K. Y. Li Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas Tabulation Results The results are given in Table 14. The tabulation is arranged by alphabetical order (Ag, AI, Ar, , Zr ) to provide ease of use in quickly locating the data by using the chemical formula. The compound name and CAS No (Chemical Abstracts Registry Number) are next provided. Values for solubility parameter and liquid volume are given in the adjacent columns. The next column provides the code for the tabulation. For the tabulation, the results for solubility parameter are ascertained from heat of vaporization and liquid volume sol par = [(~Hvap - RT) / v ]05
(14) 3
sol par = solubility parameter, (joule/cm )0.5 ~Hvap = enthalpy of vaporization, joule/mol R = universal gas constant, joule/(mol K) T = temperature, K 3 v = liquid volume, cm /mol
where
For compounds that are liquids at ambient conditions, the values apply at 25 C. For compounds that are gases at ambient conditions, the values apply at the normal boiling point temperature. For compounds that are solids at ambient conditions, the values apply at the melting point temperature. In preparing the tabulation, a literature search was conducted to identify data source publications (1-36). Both experimental values for the property under consideration and parameter values for estimation of the property are included in the source publications. The publications were screened and copies of appropriate data were made. These data were then keyed into the computer to provide a database of values for compounds for which experimental data are available. The database also served as a basis to check the accuracy of the estimation methods. Upon completion of data collection, estimation of values for the remaining compounds was performed. The compilations of CRC (1-2); Daubert and Danner (3); Janz, Ward, and Reeves (7); Landolt and Bornstein (8); Lange's Handbook (9-10), Vargaftik(18); web sites (19-21), and Yaws (22-36) were used extensively. The Kistiakowsky rule (14) and Riedel method (14) were primarily used for estimates of enthalpy of vaporization at the boiling point. Estimates of liquid density were primarily based on Schroeder correlation (14, group contribution), Le Bas method (14, group contribution), and Tyn-Calus equation (14, critical volume). Liquid volume was ascertained from molecular weight and liquid density (molecular weight/density). For the inorganic compounds, most of the data for enthalpy of vaporization and liquid density are only available for compounds with low boiling points and low melting points. The data available for compounds with high normal boiling points and high melting points are very meager. In the absence of data, the estimates should be considered rough approximations for those compounds with high boiling points and high melting points. Example In an engineering analysis, the solubility parameter and liquid volume are needed for silicon tetrachloride (SiCI4). Determine the solubility parameter and liquid volume for silicon tetrachloride. Inspection of the tabulation yields: sol par v
= 15.342 (joule/cm3)0.5
= 115.581 cm 3/mol
