CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue of Computer-Aided Design Human Modeling and Applications Guest Editor: Dr Karim Abdel-Malek, Professor, Biomedical Engineering Director, Center for Computer Aided Design, The University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA 52242, USA. Email: [email protected] February 1st, 2006 Deadline for Submission of Full Papers April 1st, 2006 1st decision notification June 1st, 2006 Deadline for Submission of Revised Papers July 1st, 2006 Final decision notification December 2006 Expected Publication The field of human modeling has gained significant momentum in recent years as it has been fueled by both the gaming and movie industries for an ever increasing need for realism and higher fidelity. Furthermore, the medical industry has also tapped human modeling to better represent human anatomy, whether for diagnostics, training, or image guided interventions. As security has increased in recent years, face recognition has played an important role in bringing new technologies to homeland security. There are an ample number of topics in this field that require further research. Modeling and simulation of humans for real-time interactivity, for example, is one such topic that has enormous implications in engineering, human factors, and gaming, yet is by all accounts, not a mature field. Similarly, obtaining high fidelity models of soft tissue deformation (e.g. skin and muscles) is far from being complete. Indeed, one cannot address the issue of human modeling without having to simultaneously address the issue of physics-based modeling.

The focus of this special issue of Computer Aided Design is to highlight state-of-the-art research in human modeling with emphasis on the following topics: † † † † † † † † †

Figure modeling Anatomy modeling Facial modeling (facial recognition) Biometrics as it applies to modeling Whole body modeling (scanning methods, meshing, and texturing) Modeling and simulation of digital humans Human modeling for realism Modeling deformable tissue (skin and muscles) Physics-based human modeling

All prospective authors are invited to obtain early feedback on possible submissions by e-mailing an abstract to the Guest Editor. All papers will be rigorously refereed. Submission of a paper to this special issue of JCAD implies that no strongly similar paper is already accepted or will be submitted to any other conference or journal. Authors should consult the “Instructions for Authors”, which are available online and printed at the back of most issues of Computer-Aided Design, for information about preparation of their manuscripts. Papers of an appropriate standard not included in the special issue may be considered for publication in a regular issue of ComputerAided Design. For this special issue, manuscripts should be submitted through the Elsevier publication management system for the CAD Journal at http://ees.elsevier.com/cad/ Please select the article type ‘Special Issue – Human Modeling’ when submitting a manuscript.
