Call for Papers Special Issue on ‘Distributed Multimedia Information Retrieval’ Multimedia computing and networking change the way that people interact with computers. In line with the new multimedia hardware technology, as well as well-engineered multimedia software, multimedia computers with the assist of internet change our society to a distanceless and colorful global community. Yet, in spite of these fantasy gradually being realized, there still exist many technical problems to be solved. For instance, a visual environment that supports collaborative work not only relies on networking technology, but also the visual language which increases interaction efficiency. With the tremendous amount of pictorial and multimedia information available, the mechanisms to effectively retrieve useful and personalized resources based on information content become interesting. Especially, due to the growing popularity of internet and web, visual technology for search agents should be further studied. This special issue of the International Journal of Visual Languages and Computing will bring together original research, techniques, state-of-the-art surveys, and advanced applications in the area of visual multimedia computing. Authors considering their contributions to this special issue of JVLC are encouraged to select one or two of the following target areas: z z z z

visual languages for collaborative work ( Visual CSCW ) visual query languages for content-based information retrieval visual technology on intelligent search agent over web pictorial information and 3-D image retrieval.

Papers submitted should contain original materials and not published in or submitted to other journals. Full papers can also be sent one of the guest editors via e-mail. All e-mail submissions should use one of the following formats: MS Word 7.0 and upper, postscript 2.0 and upper or PDF. Six copies of the manuscript including the original (reproductions are acceptable if they are clearly legible) and copies of all figures are required. In addition, one reproducible set of figures (professionally drafted ink originals of line drawings; glossy prints of halftones will be required if the paper is accepted. Manuscripts should be typewritten, double-spaced on one side of 8.5]11 in white paper with 1 inch margins. Page 1 should contain the article title, author(s), and affiliation(s); and the name and complete mailing address of the person to whom correspondence should be sent. Any footnotes to the title (indicated by *, -, etc.) should be placed at the bottom of page 1. Page 2 should contain a short abstract (100—150 words).
