Vol. 12, No. 2 The International Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled Thermonuclear Reactions: E. I. KUZNETSOVand E. P. BELIKHOV. The conference was held from 4-9 September 1961 in Salzburg, Austria; it was organized by the International Atomic Energy Authority. There were 508 delegates present who were drawn from six international organizations and from 29 countries. Of the 250 papers presented, 111 were read at the meetings; there were also surveys by Artsimovich (USSR) and Rosenblum (USA). The papers read and the discussions will be published in full in the journal Nuclear Synthesis. A brief survey of the results of the conference is given here.
shield. Good agreement is obtained for the seven-group method (in which the high-energy groups are specified empirically) and for the ten-group method. The calculations and measurements are reported. Interaction of a fatty-acid collector with uraninite during flotation: L. A. GREKULOVA. Experimental results are presented for the effects of a fatty-acid collector on the flotation of uraninite. The kinetics of the process are considered, and empirical laws are demonstrated for the relation between the state of the surface and the amount of Results are given for the electrokinetic adsorbed collector. parameters of the surface. These results are compared with flotation tests on mono-mineralic and bimineralic cases. Letters to the Editor The linear electron accelerator: G. I. ZHILEIKO. The GUPOS 137Cs-800 transportable y-ray equipment for Energy spectrum of the fast neutrons and distribution of the irradiating seeds before sowing: A. V. BIBERGAL’, K. N. EMEL’YANOV,M. M. KOROTKOV,N. I. LEIPUNSKIIand T. G. thermal-neutron flux in the experimental column of the VVR reactor: N. V. ZVONOV,A. I. MIS’KEVICH,I. V. ROGOZHKIN, RATNER. News of Science and Technology V. I. TERESHCHENKO, ZH. I. TURKOVand V. P. UTKIN. The energy distribution in a vertical channel that passes very close to the core has been examined by means of threshold detectors (Al, In, Fe, Ti, Zn, Si, Mg, 01, Hg and S). The fastneutron spectrum is presented for the level opposite the middle of the core; the distribution of the thermal-neutron flux in the channel is also given. In all cases except those of S and Cu, the activity of the detector was determined from the y-ray emission. The results are compared with those from theoretical calculations. Conditions for using the transfer functions of a reactor: P. KOVANIE. The equivalent complex gain of a reactor can be determined not only for a given law for the input, but also for a given law for the output. The results can be used in order to vary the period and power output; they can also be used to determine the conditions governing the use of elementary transfer functions and to ascertain the errors associated with the use of such functions. New formulas are given for approximating the transfer functions of subcritical, critical and supercritical reactors.

Vol. 12, No. 3 Spectrum of the bremsstrahlung produced by electrons of energy 260 MeV: Yu. M. ADO, K. A. BELOVINTSEV and S. N. STOLYAROV. Measurements have been made of the X-ray spectrum produced by electrons of energy 260 MeV; a 15-channel y-ray pair spectrometer was used. The observed distribution differs greatly from Schiff’s near the maximum energy. Repeated emission is found to be important if the target is thicker than 0.1 W radiation unit. Energy-stabilization circuit for a synchrotron: reference voltage: 0. V. BOGDANKEVICH.
use of a variable
A description is given of a relative method of measuring the yields of photonuclear reactions; a multichannel analyser is used in order to eliminate the effects of drift in the sensitivity of the detector.
