SPORTING CHANCE AS the public interest in sport, exercise and health continues to grow, with the continued drive by the Sports Council for ‘Sport For All’, there is also a parallel growth in courses being run to treat sporting injuries. Sports therapy and sports massage are becoming the ‘in vogue’ courses to take. In this, the Year of Sport, we have an opportunity as Chartered physiotherapists to publicise to the sporting fraternity the excellent skills that we have already acquired in our training. Not only are we highly skilled clinicians, trained to assess and diagnose to an accurate level, but we are also skilled educators. The majority of Chartered physiotherapists specialising in the orthopaedic field and treatment of soft tissues and fractures would be an invaluable asset to any sportsman or woman. Let us not forget these skills we have and risk being overlooked by the sporting world. A sound clinical basis and in-depth knowledge of the sport to be worked with is vital, and many of these superficial courses are unnecessary. Our holistic approach to treating and observing our patients is our asset. Would a sports therapist be able to recognise a serious medical or neurological problem? These skills are our own. In the pioneer days of physiotherapy, massage skills were a major part of the training. We have these skills at our fingertips now. Let us promote them in the Year of Sport.
We have come a long way over the years, and many Chartered physiotherapists are involved in sport, from the grassroots level to the care and education of tlite sports people. The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports Medicine is becoming more active, and has gained greater recognition from the British Association of Sport and Medicine. A new diploma course is in the process of being assessed for validation. The British Olympic Association Physiotherapy Committee is also an active voice in the sporting world, consisting only of Chartered physiotherapists. Recently, as the Sports Council has progressed with the setting up of the National Sports Medicine Institute, we have two CSP representatives on the committee. The National Coaching Foundation employs the services of Chartered physiotherapists to educate coaches, as do several validated ‘Exercise to Music’ courses. Let us continue to develop this level of involvement in sport. We must unite as a profession to establish ourselves in the -sports medicine world, and continue to enhance our credibility with back-up research into our skills and techniques. The Year of Sport is an ideal platform from which to promote our excellent assets to the Sporting world.
