. SHOJIRO HATA and RYOICHI FUKAGAWA. Estimation of deformation and strength parameters of sandy ground by use of pressuremeter. In this paper the pressuremeter test is a target because the pressuremeter is thought of as an in-situ testing device which, compared with the other methods can measure directly the deformation and strength properties of ground. At first the decision methods of the deformation modulus, undrained shear strength and internal friction angle from the pressuremeter test were proposed, then the relations between these soil parameters from the pressuremeter test and SPT blow counts, N-values, were compared with the empirical relations which were expressed as functions of the N-values. The vertical soil-plug conveyer technique which replaced the screw conveyer is developed in this study, and is applied to the ready-made pile-driving method. Soil plugs are formed at the bottom part of the pile and can be thrust rapidly by compressed air to the top of the pile, and discharged. As a result, the pile-driving rate was faster than the conventional Auger-Caisson piling method. (Terramechanics

In hard-rock excavation work, it is general practice that the rock beds are first broken by means of blasting, then the broken ground or rocks are excavated by construction machines. On jobsites near dwelling houses, public roads, or important facilities, permission to use explosives cannot be obtained because of the lack of safety, the public nuisance by vibrations, etc. Nowadays, when developments have progressed into remote areas among the hills, the above mentioned case is experienced unexpectedly often. In such a case, inefficient tools such as those used by quarrymen must be relied on at the present. Consequently, an efficient and economic and yet, safe and non-nuisance rock breaker is keenly required in the field concerned. In response to this requirement, a hard rock pre-breaker, "power splitter" which is safe and non-nuisance, and yet has high working efficiency, has just been placed 'in practical use through our research. This article introduces the development of the new power splitter. (Terramechanics Research Division, Technical

It is well known that the shear strength of soil is reduced by vibration, and that the friction force between soil and other material is reduced by liquid at a boundary surface between them. In order to grasp the combined effects of vibration with liquid supply, model tests using a cone of 40 mm diameter were performed on clay, sand and gravelmixed sand. Principal effects of lateral vibration with liquid supply were that: 1. The soil in contact with the cone front and the liquid are mixed ins-t~ntaneously, and turn into a slurry. This slurry is discharged to the earth surface along the wall of the cone.
