VIRULENCE OF VARIOLA VIRUSES FOR SUCKLING MICE i n o c u l a t e d variola virus f r o m the first egg passage in t h e i r e x p e r i m e n t s (J. K. W e suggest t h a t some of Sarkar & M i t r a ' s specim e n s m a y have c o n t a i n e d a lot of inactive virus, some of w h i c h was carried over into t h e first harvest f r o m C A M a n d interfered with t h e d e v e l o p m e n t of the intracranial infection in t h e i r i n o c u l a t e d mice. T h i s interp r e t a t i o n c o n f o r m s to some u n p u b l i s h e d e x p e r i m e n t s of o n e of us (K. D.). Virulence for b a b y mice paralleled t h a t previously r e p o r t e d for chick e m b r y o s ( D u m b e l l & H u q , 1986), except t h a t all the African isolates were significantly m o r e v i r u l e n t for mice t h a n for chick embryos. Virulence of variola for b a b y mice thus differed f r o m isolate to isolate and, for some variola isolates, was m a r k e d l y different f r o m t h e i r virulence for chick embryos. T h e s e two laboratory virulence tests m a y t h u s act as i n d e p e n d e n t markers for variola virus isolates, b u t show only a n i n c o m p l e t e correlation w i t h virulence for h u m a n s .
