F O C U S US Patent No 6,534,033 covering the core technology of its Hydrogen on Demand hydrogen storage and generation system. The patent relates to a method for storage and controlled release of hydrogen, in particular to the use of borohydride based solutions as a hydrogen storage source and a catalyst system to release hydrogen. In Feb 2003, the company was awarded Patent No 6,524,542 for a process for synthesizing borohydride compounds with reduced energy requirements. Novozymes has eight new products

Scientific Design changes hands

During 2002, Novozymes introduced five new technical enzymes and three new food enzymes. These were Finizym W (for filtration processes in the starch industry); Pectinex XXL, Smash XXL, AFP XXL (for increasing yields in fruit juicing processes); SG granulate formulations (for baking enzymes); Savinase Ultra (detergent for protein-based stains); Lecitase Ultra (to improve egg yolk properties); Termamyl Ultra 300 L (for starch stain removal); Novozym 51032 (for pulp and paper processes); and Lipex (a detergent for domestic washing machines).

In the US, Linde is selling its catalyst and engineering services company, Scientific Design, to Sabic and SüdChemie. The purchasers will operate the company as a 50-50 jv. The deal enhances Sabic’s range of technologies and Süd-Chemie’s catalyst portfolio.

Novozyme’s strategy for leather chemicals proves successful Demand for Novozyme’s leather chemicals at the start of the new millennium was poor, due to problems in the beef industry such as foot-and-mouth disease and mad cow disease. While sales were slow, Novozymes took the opportunity to develop new products and shift its focus from Europe to tanneries in China. The company is now reaping the rewards of this strategy as enzymes for the leather industry are now among its fastest growing products. Two new enzymes developed using directed evolution technology supplied by Codexis, a subsidiary of Maxygen, have been launched by Novozymes. The enzymes are the third products to be launched as part of an agreement between the two companies. Royalties on net sales of the products will be received by Codexis. The enzymes have applications in the laundry detergent, food processing, and pulp and paper industries.

TES and Rentech end exclusive deal An agreement, signed in Oct 1998, in which Texaco Energy Systems (TES) was given exclusive access to Rentech’s hydrocarbons-to-liquids (HTL) and gas-to-liquids (GTL) technologies has ended. TES will continue to use the technologies, but Rentech will now be able to supply them to other companies also. SMP fuel cell electrocatalyst combinatorial development tool complete and operational Superior MicroPowders LLC (SMP) has completed the design, fabrication, and testing of its combinatorial synthesis tool for the development of fuel cell electrocatalysts. Süd-Chemie/Choren Industries to make biofuels Süd-Chemie and Choren Industries are to cooperate in the production of fuels from renewable materials. Choren has an innovative gasification process for the production of highquality and high-purity syngas from raw materials such as wood, straw, and energy crops. Catalysts from Süd-Chemie will then produce fuels such as methanol, petrol, and diesel from this syngas. EU plans to replace normal fuels with renewable raw materials (5.75%) by 2010, correspond to a market volume of €15 bn.
