The 6th Scientific and 7th Annual Meeting of the Taiwan Child Neurology Society (TCNS) was held at the 102 Lecture Hall of National Taiwan University Medical College, Taipei, on 18 May 2002. This is the 6th academic meeting of the TCNS since its founding on 8 June 1996. The main theme of this meeting is neuroimmunology. Owing to the rapid progress of this field in recent medical sciences, this conference is devoted to a better understanding of the advanced knowledge and current research work of neuroimmunology, from basic to clinical aspects. There were two speakers from Japan: Dr Takashi Yamamura and Dr Toshiro Hara for basic and clinical exploration, respectively. Dr Yamamura (Director of Department of Immunology, National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry, Kodaira, Tokyo, Japan) delivered a lecture on autoimmune encephalomyelitis and natural killer T (NKT) cells. Dr Hara (Chairman and Prof. of Department of Pediatrics, Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan) gave a lecture on clinical aspects of neuroimmunoendocrinology. These two presentations were chaired by Prof. Yukio Fukuyama (Director of the Child Neurology Institute, Tokyo, Japan). Besides, four invited local speakers presented their research works as well as new advances in some aspects of neuroimmunology. Dr Hou-Chang Chiu (Department of Neurology, Shin Kong WHS Memorial Hospital, Taipei) gave a speech of clinical observation and immunological study on myasthenia gravis in Taiwan. Dr Ming-Liang Chou (Division of Pediatric Neurology, Chang Gung Children’s Hospital, Taoyuan) presented the neurological manifestations of vasculitis. Dr Kun-Long Hung (Department of Pediatrics, Cathay General Hospital, Taipei) delivered a report on postinfectious neurological syndromes

observed in Taiwan. Finally, Dr Yuh-Jyh Jong (Department of Pediatrics, Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital, Kaohsiung) highlighted the update of polymyositis and dermatomyositis. A special lecture on the developmental history of the Taiwan Child Neurology Society was delivered by Prof. Yu-Zen Shen (Prof. Emeritus, National Taiwan University Medical College and the former President of the Taiwan Child Neurology Society) in memory of his retirement. Additionally, 29 free papers covering various fields of current child neurology were presented as the poster section. Totally 218 participants, from all parts of the country, attended the Meeting. In the business meeting of the General Assembly, a new directorate of Executive Board was elected for a 3-year term (2002–2005). During the subsequent Board meeting, Dr Kun-Long Hung was elected as the new President and Dr Wang-Tso Lee appointed as the new Secretary-General. Meanwhile, Prof. Yu-Zen Shen was respected as the Honorary President. Currently, the TCNS consists of 153 members, of which 85 are board-certified specialists as child neurologists. I.
