MEACHAM, M. L., & WIESEN, A. E. Changing classroom behavior: A manual for precision teaching. Scranton, Pa.: International Textbook Company, 1970. Pp. vii + 212. The authors attempt to integrate two apparently opposing philosophies into a humanistic behaviorism. They attempt to provide specific guidelines for teachers desiring to produce positive behavior change in the classroom but also suggest directions in which education must move to remain relevant. The first part of this book outlines principles of learning which can be applied by the classroom teacher, including presentation of research findings from which principles derive. Included also is a chapter on ethical considerations. The second part of the book covers specific applications of precision teaching in the normal classroom, and with retarded, socially deprived and emotionally disturbed children. MINK, O. G. The behavior change process. New York: Harper and Row, 1970. Pp. ix + 209. $3.95. (paper) A self-instructional text consisting of linear programmed instruction combining constructed linear and multiple-response frames, at an eighth grade reading level, designed to familiarize teachers and counselors with a process for behavior change. The author selected the process of reinforcement learning as offering the most potential for managing behavior change in the classroom with the least potential harm to students. Text includes an adjunct chapter on principles of behavior theory and pre-, post-, and retention tests as a check on learning.
