EQUIPMENT NOTES

The Coach Incentive Spirometer ANNE ARBUTHNOT MCSP Siilx.rinrmdent Phpiotherapiat. Cardiothoracic Service\.

SI Georpe'\ Hospital. London

THIS incentive spirometer is clearly marked and easy t o use. The 'Coach' marker on the' side of the spirometer encourages the patient t o take a slow inspiration, thereby ensuring proper use of the device. On the main chamber a useful marker can be set at a required target giving the patient a goal t o work towards. The incorporation of a one-way valve means that the spirometer can be used for several patients, although each patient would need his o w n tubing and filter. These can be purchased in packs of ten from the suppliers of the spirometer. The device is especially useful in the treatment of post-operative patients, and I have b u n d that patients enjoy having a visual guide t o their daily progress. Suppliers: lntersurgical Ltd, Crane House, Gould Road, Twickenham, Middlesex T W 2 6RS (tel 01-755 1477). Price f12.50.

The Coach is a volumetric incentive spirometer which encourages the patient t o inhale a specific volume of air while providing the physiotherapist with an accurate measurement to assess objectively the patient's daily progress.

Amputee Stump Board CHARLES MANCEY MediLdl Ph\\ic\ TechniLidn. Robdl Devon dnd Exeter H(npitdl (WOnfWdf

THE design of the original Exeter amputee stump board (Physiotherapy,71, 1 1,477) fits most DHSS amroved wheelchairs. However. a cheaper and more efficient stump board has been constructed at Exeter for the 8BL Barrett chair. The new design has a number of important developments -it swings easily t o the side, out of the way of the amputee, and it attaches t o the existing points of the wheelchair, avoiding any expensive adaptations. Also the height of the stump board is easily adjustable using a spanner, and the whole assembly can be simply removed from the chair. This design is not available commercially but anyone is welcome t o construct it using this diagram.
