bronchitis, or status asthmaticus, local anaesthesia may well be indicated. The advanced age of the patient and slowly progressive avascular changes make this a notoriously difficult field in which to assess results and orthopaedic surgeons throughout the country await with great interest the M.R.C. report on a long-term survey of the results of different methods o f internal fixation of the subcapital fracture. The use of multiple wire or pin fixation for displaced subcapital and mid-cervical fractures is also controversial. Many surgeons tried this method in the past and gave it up because of their tendency to wander and bend. They are, however, less traumatic to insert and theoretically, at any rate, should cause less damage to the intraosseous vascular supply of the femoral head. Multiple screw fixation, in which the screws are attached to a short plate fixed to the femur, has been advocated and used by Deyerle (1965) for many years. Certainly it has the merit of extreme simplicity but it is surprising that the fixation has been found rigid enough to permit early weight-bearing. Provided the m e t h o d described here can continue to achieve a high percentage of bony union in displaced subcapital fracture, the ease of the
