Manuel d’orthopedie

This well-produced volume in French is written primarily for the dental student. After an introductory chapter, setting out the goals of the book, the chapter on basic principles discusses the essentials of biometrics, genetic considerations in orthodontics, the development of occlusion, growth and development, and neuromuscular functions. A chapter on diagnosis covers terminology, classification, records, and diagnostic assessment. Chapter IV is largely devoted to etiologic considerations. The part on functions and parafunctions is particularly interesting. Chapter 5, the final chapter, details the treatment procedures from treatment planning through actual therapy, retention, relapse, postorthodontic equilibration, and the essentials of cleft palate and cleft lip treatment. Considering the size, the book is quite complete. If translated, it could serve as a model for dental schools where undergraduate orthodontic indoctrination is not strongly emphasized beyond the recognition stage. T. M. Graber

This newly released volume is a compilation of papers presented at an international conference on the subject in January, 1982, at UCLA. The book is an interdisciplinary study of genetic and environmental factors that influence prenatal and postnatal growth and development of bone in general and the craniofacial region in particular. The volume is divided into four major sections: bone growth at the cellular level, embryogenesis and development of bone, postnatal growth of bone, and factors and mechanisms influencing bone growth. Topics of interest include studies on the regulation of bone synthesis and bone resorption, the role of tissue inter-
actions in bone growth, a dynamic geometry for predicting growth of gross craniofacial morphology, phenytoin and bone metabolism, and skeletal changes in children with neuromuscular disorders. The volume is well produced; illustrations are most adequate, paper stock excellent, and type size readable. The ninety contributors are pre-eminent. The book is a “must” for anyone seriously interested in bone biology, but it is also quite useful for anatomists, orthodontists, pediatricians, and general dentists. T. M. Graber
The Journal
of the Osaka Dental School
Mamoru Sakuda, editor-in-chief Osaka, Japan, Osaka 1982, 263 pages
University
Dental
School,
Vol. 22,
This fine journal is another high-quality production in English from a Japanese dental school where significant research is going on. There appears to be no abatement of research efforts in the biomedical fields in Japan. The sophistication of the research methodology and armamentaria is very high, indeed. The English translation is practically flawless; the illustrations, paper quality, and production details are superior. Of the twenty-three articles, only one by Oyama and Sakuda is directly related to clinical orthodontics (a longitudinal study of fifty-two treated Class III patients), but at least a half-dozen other articles are in the oral physiology and tissue study field and are well done. Before embarking on similar research projects, American investigators would do well to read these contributions. T. M. Graber
