Abstract A new patented process for desalinating sea water has been developed by Svenska Utvecklings AB (SUI, the Swedish National Development Co. This newly developed equipment is based on a new type of low temperature, low pressure desalination design combining thermal and membrane effects. The system is called SU Membrane Distillation System. The system is built up fn modules. The modules can be combined in series to meet the need for larger capacitfes. she standard modules in large scale systems will produce about 5 m per 24-hour period and module. The following are amongst the advantages offered by the system: The system utilizes the natural temperature gradients 05 waste energy and therefore has low energy costs. (1.25 kWh/m fresh water). Energy consumption does not vary with the salinity. entire evaporation unit and the connecting pipes are The manufactured of plastic which means low capitalI costs and excludes corrosion. Due to the low-temperature(below 7O'C) and atmospheric pressure conditions involved, the system can be operated by technical staff without any specialist training. Defective sections can be replaced without stopping the entire plant. This ensures high avaflaility and easy maintenance. Capacity can easily be exfstfng plant.

A section of the full scale prototype was built and tested fn 1982. Our contrfbutfon to the congress will show the physical principles of the SU Membrane Distillatfon System and also discuss results obtained from the prototype tests.
