very soon ceases to shake the head, for the ointment exerts an eminently calmative effect in allaying pruriginous sensations due to superficial lesions of the skin. As soon as the shaking of the head is stopped the canker hegins to heal and soon cicatrises completely. If the dog is eczematous M. Nocard completes this local treatment hy the internal administration of small doses of arsenic in the form of Fowler's solution.-Recueil de MM. vet.
THE OCCURRENCE OF CYSTICERCI IN THE MUSCLES OF THE OX. DR HERTWIG, Director of the Berlin Abattoir, furnishes some interesting statistics regarding the frequency of cysticerci in the muscles of cattle, and the most common seats of the parasites. During the past year these hydatids were found in 389 cattle and I calf, being 277 more than in the previous year. In his previous report Dr Hertwig mentioned the discovery that the muscles of mastication are the commonest seat of the cysts, and this observation was fully confirmed by the result of the examinations made during the following year. The parasites were found in the :\1 uscles of mastication 316 times and heart . 39 " " " and muscles of neck " and tongue . .," 4 " " the neck " " " and in the tongue " Tongue " and heart 2 "" Pectoral muscles and tongue " ;vr l1scl1iar system in general . 22 " It will thus be seen that, putting aside the 22 cases in which the parasites were distributed over the whole body, they had their seat in the Muscles of mastication 360 times 41 " " heart " tongue . IO "Muscles of the neck . 3 " Pectoral muscles " On the ground of these observations the muscles of mastication must be pronounced the favourite seat of cysticerci in the ox.-Oesterr. HYPODERMIC INJECTIONS OF CARBOLIC ACID IN TETANUS. STRAZZERI and Titone report (Rif. Med., loth November 1891) a case of traumatic tetanus in which they effected a cure by Baccelli's method of hypodermic injections of carbolic acid. The patient was a boy, aged 9, who had fallen on his right knee, bruising and slightly grazing the skin. Eight days after the injury he developed well-marked symptoms of tetanus. He was treated with injections of a 2 per cent. solution of carbolic acid repeated every six hours, opiates being given internally. The boy's surroundings were very unfavourable, as he was one of a large family living in a miserable hovel, which was shared also at night by a mule. In spite of this an improvement in the symptoms was noted after the first few injections. On the fifteenth day the patient recovered the power of mastication, and after four weeks' treatment he was completely cured.-British Medical Journal.
