Additives for Polymers

The Polarite 490 series is specially designed for SMC and completes the low-profile mineral additives portfolio. This consists of Polarite 42OEW, 42OEB, 420GW and 423GB, which are recommended for BMC and based on calcium carbonate, and 88OEW and 884GB which are based on ATH and are suitable for both BMC and SMC applications. In the production of the Polarite 490 series, the particle size of the calcium carbonate has been engineered to minimise viscosity. This allows more of the filler to be added and, as this carries the low-profile polymer, gives rise to zero shrink, low-profile mouldings. In addition no release agent is required. The Polarite 490 series gives self-releasing properties to mouldings. It is available in natural white and black although other colours are possible, for example for glossy low-profile mouldings. PROCESSING New low-flow pump for accurate dosing

Very accurate dosing rates can be achieved with a new progressing cavity pump which is the smallest pump ever made by PCM Pumps of Corby in the UK, (the company which introduced this design principle nearly 60 years ago). The pump has applications in many industries, notably in food production, chemicals and cosmetics. Uniform doses as low as half a litre per hour at 10 bar pressure can be achieved using the new pump which has a non-pulsating flow. The upper pumping rate is around 30 litres per hour. The highly significant lower dosing rate can be compared to the previous lowest rate achievable of around 20 litres per hour. The pump uses PCM’s double-length rotor design which increases shear resistance and dosing accuracy. This low shear action can be particularly important for pumping fragilestructured products which might otherwise break down into their constituent parts. A further important feature is the valve-free design. This is preferable for pumping particulate media which can result in valves becoming inoperative.
