BOOK REVIEWS THE TREATMENT OF FRACTURES. By Dr. Lorenz BCihIer. 4th English Ed., Trans. from the 4th EnIarged and Revised German Ed. By Ernest W. Hey Groves, M.D. Bait., WiIIiam Wood and Co., 1935. This is a we&reproduced transIation of the fourth German edition of B8hIer’s book. It is good to have this important work avaiIabIe in EngIish. New materia1 on the treatment of fractures of the cakaneus and of the cervica1 spine has been added to the English edition which may now be considered as the Iast word to date on this subject. As Dr. Groves so we11 points out, no one has done more than Dr. BohIer “to demonstrate the importance of proper treatment of fractures, the necessity for unity of contro1, IoyaI and efficient team work, accurate knowIedge of the after-resuIts, and meticuIous attention to detai1.” Whether agreeing with a11 of Dr. BohIer’s methods or not, everyone treating fractures wiII want to and, in fact shouId, study this work thoroughIy. SURGICAL PATHOLOGY OF THE PERIE. HertzIer, M.D. TONEUM. By Arthur Phila., J. B. Lippincott Company, 1935. This is the sixth volume of a series of ten monographs by Dr. HertzIer on surgicaI pathoIogy. There are over ZOO beautifu1 illustrations. The subject is compIeteIy covered and the author is too modest when he says: “As I review these pages I am impressed with the pitiabIe Iittle I have to offer for these years of toi1.” Dr. HertzIer has succeeded in picking the wheat from the chaff and what is known of the pathoIogy and physioIogy of the peritoneum wiI1 be found we11 digested in these pages. The author is a thorough student of the Iiterature and adds to this an experience of forty years of keen observation. His book is we11 worth whiIe. APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUE FOR ROENTGENOGRAPHY OF THE CHEST. By Charles WeyI and S. Reid Warren, Jr. SpringfieId, CharIes C. Thomas, 1935. For the speciaIist, however, no better guide can be offered. The work must be considered as a cIassic in its own Iine. A word must aIso be said for the spIendid typography of this work. SpeciaI commendations are due to the iIIustrations which are unusuaIIy exceIIent and which are reproduced by the aquatone process which is too expensive for the average medica pubIication. Since the preparation of this book, word has come of the death of Dr. Thomas McCrae who has been revising OsIer’s famous work since Sir WiIIiam’s death. Under Dr. McCrae’s the famous “Practice” of Sir editorship, WiIIiam OsIer has carried on and retained its vitaIity. With both the author and the reviser now dead, it is to be hoped that a new editor wiI1 be found who can continue this work which has been one of the Iandmarks of American MedicaI Literature. As Dr. McCrae points out, there are changes and additions in practicaIIy every part of this book, which has been entireIy reset. WhiIe Iarger than before, it has been kept within a convenient size by the seIection of a new type page. The OsIer tradition has been maintained in the emphasis on the cIinica1 side of disease probIems. This book, representing the best traditions in medicine, may stiI1 be considered the outstanding work on cIinica1 medicine. THE KIDNEY IN HEALTH AND DISEASE.
