The Ringberg workshop 1997 on the Application of Computational Thermodynamics organized by Bo Sundmani, Fritz Aldinger and Hans Jurgen Seifert Max Planck Institut fur Metallforschung Pulvermetallurgisches Laboratorium Heisenbergstrasse 5 DE 70569 Stuttgart, Germany Under the auspices of the Max-Planck-Institut fur Metallforschung, Stuttgart and Scientific Group Thermodata Europe @GTE) an international workshop on “Applications of Computational Thermodynamics” was arranged in S&loss Ringberg in 1997. S&loss Ringberg is a castle owned by the Max-Planck-Society and is situated in the south of Bavaria. It provides an excellent setting for scientific discussions and these reports are from the third workshop dedicated to computational thermodynamics. The previous workshops have also been published in the Calphad Journal and dealt with Unary data for elements and substances [95Cal] and the second with Thermodynamic Modelling of Solutions [97Cal]. This workshop followed the same working rules as the previous and the participants worked hard during the meeting to prepare a paper together. Unfortunately the delays in finishing off each paper has taken a lot of time and one group has still not delivered a manuscript. But it is high time to publish the available reports. The first two groups followed up the work on the previous two meetings, thus group 1 dealt with the modelling of pure elements and “end members” of solutions and group 2 with modelling of solutions. Group 3,4 and 5 discussed the main topic, application of computational thermodynamics. Group 3 concentrated on phase transformations, nucleation and coarsening, group 4 and 5 joined forces and discussed together on the use of thermodynamic software in process modelling and new applications of thermodynamic calculations. As before the participants circulated between the groups and the group leaders had a hard task to combine theory with what is practically useful. The reports from these groups will follow this preface and it is the hope that they can inspire the further use of thermodynamic calculations in many fields of science as well as for industrial applications.
