This treatise on traffic signal systems deals with an isolated signal (both &d-time and trafhc-actuated), coordinated signal systems, the factors influencing traffic flow through one-dimensional signal systems (speed, journey time, vehicular delay, presence of pedal cycles or heavy trucks). Timing methods for coordinated systems are given and a new method is proposed which uses both maximum bandwidth and minimum delay criteria. Large, centrally controlled signal systems are studied, and a method is given for timing such systems.
