Qusey G.O. Battikhi, Medical Technological Labs for Analyses and Research, Ar,Uran, Jordan. Sera from jaundiced patients were assayed for total and direct bilirubin (Jenderassiket al 1938) before and after treatint with partially purified cucurbitxin(s) (B&t&hi, 1936) for 10 mjnutes at 37'C, using a dose of partially.purifiedcucurbitacin(s) of 7.1 bg/ml total serur.; bilirubin level decreased from 5.01 f 1.54 xrg/dlto 3.57 + 1.1 rq/'dland direct bilirubin level decreased from 4.0 f 1.0 to 3.74 C 0.34 rq/dl, (n = 4). A high dose of partially purified cucurbitacin(s) of 284 pg/ml was found to drmtically decrease total bilirubin level from 1.38 rq/dl to 0.032 w/al. These results might suggest that partially purified cucurbitacin(s) decrease both total and direct serur.7 bilirubin level in jaundiced patients dose dependently. It is hoped that analytically pure cucurbitacin(s) could 'beused as a potential drug in treatmznt of jaundice once their structures have been elucidated. TREATMENT AND PREVENTION OF HYPOOSMOLAR COMA FOLLOWING HYDRATION IN THE SYNDROME OF ANTIDIURETIC HORMONE EXCESS ASSOCIATED WITH BRONCHOGENIC CARCINOMA DURING CHEMOTHERAPY WITH C&PLATINUM. Klink M.M., Riegger A.J.G., van Aerssen M. and Kochsiek K. Medizinische Universititsklinik, Wiirzburg, Fed. Rep. Germany. The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is characterized by hyponatremia, hypoosmolar plasma and inappropriately concentrated urine due to an inappropriately high secretion of ADH. Intravenous hydration prior to chemotherapy (cis-platinum, etoposide) resulted in hypoosmolar coma ina patientwith oatcellcarcinomawith a plasma Na of 134 mmol/l at admission. 3 days of infusion reduced plasma Na to 116 mmol/l, plasma osmolality (Posm) to 231 mosmol/kg H 0 while plasma ADH (radioimmunoassay) was hi hly increased (24 pg/ml). From the beginning ani durmg the whole treatment periode (4 months ei we found an inappropriately concentrating urine (antidiuresis, urine osmolality 715 + 51 mosmol/kgH20) while urine sodium and potassium excretion and renal function were normal. Following chemotherapy the tumor showed a complete remission (bronchoscopy) and plasma ADH levels returned to nearly normal (3.0 to 6.8 pg/ml). Fluid restriction and sodium chloride administration (5 g/die) resulted in a normalization of Posm between therapeutic interventions. Severe hyponatremia and coma could be prevented during hydration by prophylactic intravenous infusion of 750 ml of 3% saline accompanying each chemotherapeutic regimen. 6 months later hyponatremia developed again associated with considerable progression of the tumor. Hydration in patients with malignant tumor and hyponatremia must be monitored very carefully to prevent life-threatening hyponatremia and coma. Even marginal hyponatremia suggests inappropriate ADH excess, which might be common in patients with bronchogenic carcinoma. A-102

THE EFFECT OF SUBMAXTLLAR GLAND EXTRACTS ON WOUND HEALING IN hlALE?&!E Erbaq,D., And,A., Oygtir,T.,Erba.y,S., Gazi University Medicine Faculty Department of Physiology and Morphology. The submaxillar gland (SMG) has many proteins (nearly twenty six kinds of proteins). Epidermsl Growth Pgctor (EGF), Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), and Renin are the anb mostly known proteins. Wb wanted to research the effects of these proteins on wound hczlin& Fbr this purpose we prepared the submaxillar gland extracts (SMGE) and demonstrated that it had EGF which was enough for precocious theeth eruption and eyelid opening . The experimental animals were divided in three groups. Each group had 6 Yale mice . proup was treated bg- SMGE topically, third group was First group was oontrol, S.XT.? treated by intraperitoneal SMGE ininctions for 7 days. Experimental animals were weighted in first az.5 seventh days of treatment and compared by wStudent t" test. The mean of third group body weights were decrease. Microscopically the wound healing of first group was normal and there were some inflamation cells and hyperemie. The second group had also some inflammation cells hyperemie and increased collagen fibres and large adipocytes. The third group had a few inflammation cells but increased collagen fibres and large adipocytes compared to the seoond group. Conolusion: SMGE treatment by intraperitoneallg increases the wound healing rate by increasing of the systemic factors which promete growth*
