CORRESPONDENCE. T R Y P A N O S O M I A S I S OF C A T T L E IN U G A N D A .
To the Editor, TRANSACTIONS of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. DEAR SIR,
I wish to comment on what appears to me to be an inaccuracy in the valuable " Notes on Trypanosomiasis of cattle in Uganda," by Mr. U. F. RICHARDSON, which appeared in No. 2 of this year's TRANSACTIONS. I refer to the last paragraph of his conclusions, namely, " No treatment has been found to give satisfactory results in the case of T. vivax infection." Mr. RICHARDSONmay have had in mind his Report--as Veterinary Pathologist, Uganda--for the year 1923; but in the article under criticism he has not produced any evidence to justify, or even support, this sweeping conclusion. In opposition to it I could cite cases known to me ; but I think the unsupported statement of Mr. RICHARDSONis more than cancelled out by the definite evidence to the contrary published by the Chief of his own Department. In para. 59 of the Annual Report of the Veterinary Department of Uganda for 1927, it is stated : " (a) Reference should be made to the Government transport oxen treated for T. vivax infection by two complete series of antimony potassium tartrate injections during 1925. " (b) No trypanosomes have been recorded in the peripheral blood of those animals during the regular bi-weekly ' live-blood ' examinations that have been maintained since treatment and the oxen are in good condition." My own experience is to the effect that, after a single course of tartar emetic injections, 1elapses to T. vivax infection are the exception, whereas relapses to T. congolense infection are the rule. Yours faithfully, H. E. HORNBY.
