The European w a t e r and w a s t e w a t e r t r e a t m e n t equipment market is predicted to witness moderate to strong growth up to and beyond the end of the millennium, p r e d i c t e d to rise from its 1996 revenue level of US$4.97 billion to US$7.39 billion by the year 2003. According to a new study by Frost & Sullivan, market growth is e x p e c t e d to be driven by conc e r n over w a t e r quality and stricter implementation of environmental legislation concerning both sewerage connection rates and pollution control. The Urban Wastewater Directive, in particular, is poised
to p r o v i d e a stimulus for g r o w t h in the w a t e r and w a s t e w a t e r t r e a t m e n t equipment market. The European market has b e e n dramatically affected in recent years by reduced public sector s p e n d i n g in many regions. This has been exacerbated by a sluggish recovery from the recession of the early 1990s. Stiff competition, combined with end-user pressures, has e n c o u r a g e d severe price erosion which has hindered revenue growth. "The Growing Importance of the Water and W a s t e w a t e r Treatment Equipment Market" Report 3122 is available from Frost & Sullivan at US$3950.
