A new high voltage electron beam welder-with full microprocessor control and a new specially designed electron gun-is announced. Developed under sponsorship from the Department of Industry, and launched at Wentgate’s St Ives premises on Tuesday 1 February 1983, the new welder offers a 150 kV maximum accelerating voltage with an inrtial 6.0 kW maximum beam power. Opening up a new market area for Wentgate, the first of the new series has already been sold, and heads up a range of which one of the chief operating highlights is the microprocessor keyboard entry of welding parameters. The control console includes a Visual Display Unit which displays both set and actual parameters during the welding cycle. A permanent record of the parameters for each weld can be obtained via an optional high speed analogue recorder. The facility also includes microprocessor storage of up to ten welding programs; automatic fault diagnosis; operator identification or vetting to prevent unauthorized use of the machine; a quality assurance package, and a manual override selection. Another important feature of the machine is the stand-alone microprocessor controlled vacuum system. This system interacts with the main machine microprocessor to present a flexible vacuum control system tailored to the exacting requirements of electron beam welding machines. The 150 kV welder also incorporates a new electron gun, based on a development by the British Welding Institute for Wentgate using computer-aided design. The high voltage unit is based on a switched mode closed-loop high voltage power supply operating at a frequency of 14130 kHz.

The implanter has a high degree of flexibility and its modular construction allows simple adaption for production use.
Advantages of the new electron gun technology include very fast response time, enabling beam parameters to be changed abruptly during welding; and low stored energy (of the order of 14 joules) which in the event of flash-avers--caused by material vapour or malfunction-is insufficient to cause damage to the component being welded. Wentgate has pioneered the use of small chamber, low power, low cost electron beam welders over the past 10 yr, and the new high powered range incorporates all the precision engineering features for which Wentgate is renowned. A range of different vacuum sizes is available for the new development, though it is expected to be of greatest interest to manufacturers requiring 1 m cube-or larger-chamber dimensions. The new welder design overcomes the working distance, beam power and welding profile limitations of low voltage machines-and is expected to benefit a variety of applications, particularly within the aerospace industry.
