1.10. SECOND SYMPOSIUM

ON GEODESY IN AFRICA”

Nairobi, Kenya, 9-20 November 1981 The Commission for Geodesy in Africa plans to hold the Second Symposium on Geodesy in Africa from 9-U) November 1981 at the Kenyatta Conference Centre, Nairobi, Kenya. The meetings will be organised by the Survey of Kenya, the Regional Centre for Services in Surveying and Mapping of Nairobi and the University of Nairobi. The Symposium will be sponsored by the International Association of Geodesy, in collaboration with the IUGG Local Committee of Kenya, the IUGG Committee on Advice to Developing Countries and the African Association of Cartography. Theme. The theme of the Symposium is Geodesy in Africa in the 1980s. The Objectives. The First Symposium on Geodesy in Africa, held in Khartoum in 1974, resulted in the formation of the Commission for Geodesy in Africa and a growing awareness of the development of geodetic activities in Africa. The purpose of the Second Symposium on Geodesy in Africa is: 1. To make an assessment of what has been achieved since the first symposium. 2. To review the present situation of geodesy in the developing countries in general and in Africa in particular. 3. To spotlight the factors militating against the development of geodesy in the developing countries and propose solutions to them. 4. To identify the problems in the advancement of geodesy which are peculiar to the developing countries generally and Africa in particular and suggest remedies for them. 5. To consider the present and likely future trends in the development of geodesy and their interaction with other disciplines, particularly geophysics. 6. To attempt to predict the state of geodesy in the developing countries in general and Africa in particular in the present decade. The Convenor of the Symposium is Mr. R. Oluwole Coker, President, Commission for Geodesy in Africa, whose address is: c/o Kenting Africa Resource Services Ltd, P.O. Box 1658, Lagos, Nigeria. The Organizing Committee is composed as follows: Mr. R. Omondi (Chairman), Survey of Kenya, P.O. Box 30046, Nairobi. Mr. W. Absaloms, Survey of Kenya, P.O. Box 30046, Nairobi. Mr. B.A. Sikilo, Regional Centre for Specialised Services in Surveying and Mapping, P.O. Box 18118,Nairobi. Prof. R.A. Rostom, University of Nairobi, P.O. Box 30197, Nairobi. Mr. C.J. Swain, University of Nairobi, P.O. Box 30197, Nairobi. Mr. J.D. Obel (Secretary), Survey of Kenya, P.O. Box 30046, Nairobi. The sessions will feature invited as well as contributed papers. There will also be an exhibition and demonstration of geodetic instruments. (@Extract from IUGG Chronical
