using 4 bins. Data from one patient showed that the PTVgat=ng was 22% and 37% smaller than an 'all-bins' PTV and standard PTV, respectively (Fig. 1 & 2), suggesting that gating is of benefit in selected patients. Similar data on gating will be available for all patients at the meeting.

Conclusion: The use of 4D scans resulted in significantly smaller PTVs than those derived using single conventional CT scans and 'standard' margins. Gating may further reduce the target volume, A major advantage of 4D scans is that they permit the benefits of gating t o be objectively evaluated before treatment. Tumor ( c c )

Hair loss and radiotherapy

M. B/aerre Aarhus University Hospital, Oncolocy Department, Radiotherapy Clinic, Aarhus C, Denmark Introduction: Patients with

brain tumours undergoing radiotherapy lose their hair 10-15 days after they have begun treatment. Many patients talk a lot about their hair and about losing it, especially before they lose it. Sometimes it seems to be a bigger problem than their disease.

Purpose: How do patients, undergoing radiotherapy, feel about losing their hair? Methods: 3 patients entered the study: 2 women and 1 man. They were from 40 to 80 years of age. The study was qualitative and the patients were interviewed by a semi structured interview guide

Fig 1. PT.,,Vg~v~.~ ~ (red) is 22% smaller

The focus point of the study was: Patients feeling and thoughts at the idea of losing their hair

than tile 'all-bins' t ~ V (blue)

When this information was giving to them • -,

When they actually lose their hair

• -, After they have losing their hair- both with regard to their own'reaction as well as that of their relatives~

Result: Overall the patients fear to look different. Two categories were found: 1)

They expect a change

2)

They prepare them selves for a change

For both categories there are another four subcategories, which will be presented on the poster. The result can help nurses and other who support patients with brain tumours undergoing radiotherapy, to help and understood their patients situation in the period while they are waiting for their hair loss.
