(USSR) Analysis of the regime of typical thermionic converters is given for the case of relatively high cathode temperatures. (USSR) The thermionic work functions of polycrystalline platinum and iridium wires were found to be 5.13 eV and 5.40 eV respectively. The work functions of surface ionization for bismuth on the two metals were 5.77 eV and 5.8 eV respectively. The emission from platinum before baking for two hours at 1950°K was unstable due to adsorbed hydrocarbons and hydrogen dissolved in the metal. E Ya Zandberg and A Ya Tontegode, Zh Tekh Fiz, 38 (4), April 1968, 737-741 (in Russian). 18 1192. On the Auger mechanism of characteristic losses in atomic collisions. (USSR) Some aspects of the theory of producing multi-charged ions in collisions between atoms and fast ions, taking account of the Auger effect, are discussed. L M Kishinevskiy and E S Parilis, Zh Tekh Fiz, 38 (4), April 1968, 760-763 (in Russian). 18 1193. On the surface ionization of alkaline halide molecules on platinum. (USSR) The surface ionization of CsC1 and KCI on Pt was measured and a very strong influence of cleanliness of the surface was observed. For a clean platinum surface the character of the process is similar to that for iridium. E Ya Zandberg and A Ya Tontegode, Zh Tekh Fiz, 38 (4), April 1968, 763-766 ~in Russian). 18 1194. Instabilities in a low pressure discharge in a transverse magnetic field. (USSR) Argon discharges at 5 × 10-5 to 10-3 tort, with voltages of 1 to 7 kV and magnetic field of 0.2 to 2 kOe, were investigated. Short instabilities with simultaneous rise of the positive ion and negative electron currents were observed but the peaks strongly depend on the bending of the anode axis. At anode-to-magnetic field vector angles at which double anode electron layers are formed the amplitude of peaks is very small. N A Kervalishvili, Zh Tekh Fiz, 38 (4), April 1968, 770-773 (in

(USSR) Methods are discussed for obtaining large beam currents from an electron gun by means of beam stabilization, when interaction of the beam with residual gases makes the beam unstable. Effect of temperature on the properties of pulsed laser action in electron transitions in diatomic molecules. (USSR) The temperature dependence of the optical gain is studied theoretically for a nitrogen laser and the results are experimentally proved. Investigation of high temperature phenomena due to focusing of intense radiation from a laser on a solid target. (USSR) A solid target was located in a chamber at a pressure of 10-e to 50 torr and irradiated by laser light pulses of 3 nanosec duration and the plasma (torch) produced by the incidence of light on the target was optically investigated. The main gas parameters of the shock wave and the electron density distribution in the torch were determined and good accordance with the theoretical values was found.
