1.2 Workshop structure and participants The Second Workshop on bovine and ovine leukocyte antigens was organized in two phases: ( 1) a first phase in which most of the flow cytometry data were generated, and which ended with a preliminary clustering; (2) a second phase in which all temporary clusters could be further analysed by histological, biochemical and functional techniques. In this way laboratories were able to focus on a small panel of mAbs of their interest which could include groups of mAbs to known antigens or potentially novel clusters. December 1990: A circular was distributed asking for mAbs to be offered for inclusion in the workshop panel. These could be submitted as ascitic fluid, culture supernatant or purified antibody. June 1991: A total of 189 antibodies submitted by ten laboratories were distributed to 11 participants. The panel contained 28 control samples, which included mAbs to the antigens defined in the First Workshop, mAbs to Ig, MHC Class I and II, and a mAb to a trypanosome antigen, which acted as a negative control. Three blind duplicate controls were added to check the reliability of the data. December 1991: A preliminary clustering using the Leukocyte Typing Database IV (LTDB4) software (Oxford Electronic Publishing, Oxford University Press, Oxford, UK) was performed on 50 cell lines and the results were distributed. Participants then began the second phase, and studied preliminary clusters in more detail. July 1992: Results of the second phase were distributed to participants to reduce time for data presentation and to permit discussions to be held immediately on the day of the meeting. A final clustering analysis was performed. 16 August 1992: The data were presented and discussed the day before the 3rd International Veterinary Immunology Symposium at Budapest. A list of the participating laboratories is given in Table 1.
