12th SCBA International Symposium Comes to Taipei in 2009 The North American elite Chinese bioscientists to hold their next biennial meeting in Taipei The Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America (SCBA) will hold its 12th International Symposium at the Conference Center of the Academia Sinica in Taipei, from June 15 to 18, 2009. The SCBA is the largest professional society for Chinese bioscientists in the United States and Canada. This is the second time the SCBA will hold its biennial meeting in Taipei, Taiwan. The first one was held in Taipei in 2001. The 2009 International Symposium is organized by SCBA and the Academia Sinica, with principal sponsorship from the Academia Sinica, the National Health Research Institutes, China Medical University and Hospital, National Taiwan University College of Medicine, and several distinguished cosponsors including the US National Institutes of Health, Natural Science Foundation, Kenson BioVentures, LLC, MD Anderson Cancer Center, UC San Francisco, Institute of Molecular Medicine and Medical College of Georgia. SCBA also anticipates that additional universities, institutes and industrial corporate supporters will join as cosponsors of this exciting and unprecedented meeting. About 1000–1500 scientists from the United States, Canada, Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore are anticipated to participate in this 3½ day conference. The theme of this unique meeting is Science for a Healthier and Better Life, and it will feature Nobel Laureates, various Members of the US National Academy of Sciences, the Academia Sinica of Taiwan and the Chinese Academy and Institutes, and about 150 invited speakers who are leaders in cutting-edge research and development in biological, medical and biotechnological sciences. These scientists will present their research and hypotheses in four plenary sessions and 32–40 different workshops. SCBA also anticipates over 150 poster presentations from scientists, investigators and students from various parts of the world. SCBA is a society dedicated to the establishment of fraternity, communication, mutual assistance and improvement of professional careers. Its missions are to: (a) Promote research in bioscience (b) Encourage advancement of biological and medical knowledge (c) Improve the qualifications and occupational opportunities of its members (d) Facilitate professional contact among its members (e) Establish a spirit of fraternity and international cooperation In an effort to promote the goals of the SCBA, the organization has hosted 11 biennial international symposia in the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, China and Taiwan in the past 23 years. These symposia have brought together bioscientists from both academia and industry for the open exchange of ideas, establishment of collaboration, networking and professional friendship, leading to the improvement of better and mutual understanding of peace and humanity. “This meeting marks an exciting time for bioscientists,” said Joseph K.-K. Li, SCBA Executive Director. “With increasing contributions from Chinese bioscientists here and overseas, scientific knowledge is growing at an unprecedented rate. This will enlighten our basic and fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of life. With the collaborative efforts of SCBA and its industrial partners, we should be able to stimulate economic development, enhance the future of our society and improve the quality of our life globally via advances in biological and biomedical sciences.” For more information on SCBA and if you are interested in attending the 12th SCBA International Symposium in Taipei, June 15–18, 2009, please contact either one of the two International Liaisons (Joseph K.-K.
