Layered Semiconductors and Metals, Bari, Italy. This satellite conference to the International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors in Rome is the successor of a series of small but highly informative meetings on materials with layered structures (Taormina 1968, Monterey 1972, Plymouth 1975). The Organizing Committee (E. Mooser, Chairman) is proposing the following list of tentative topics: Crystallography and Crystal Chemistry; Crystal Growth, New Materials; Charge Density Waves; Phase Transitions; Optical Properties and High-intensity Excitation; Transport Phenomena, Superconductivity; Photoemission and Electron Spectroscopy; Phonon and Electron Bands. International Conference on Magnetic Bubbles, Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The conference, which continues the tradition started at the San Jose Conference on bubbles in 1974, is being organized as a satellite to the International Conference on Magnetism in Amsterdam (September 6-10, 1976) under the auspices of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). The aim of this conference is to bring together scientists working in the field of magnetic bubbles. Topics ranging from material preparation and domain physics to device fabrication and testing will be covered. The conference is intended to be a discussion meeting where problems and new developments on magnetic bubbles can be discussed among scientists of the various subdisciplines. The program will include sessions on the following topics: Amorphous materials; Crystalline materials; Wall dynamics; Devices; Device physics; Fabrication; Reliability.

Optical Phenomena in Infrared Materials The meeting is sponsored by the Optical Society of
America. Co-chairperson: B. Bendow, Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories and S.S. Mitra, University of Rhode Island. Papers are solicited in the areas of optical phenomena, properties, and processes in infrared optical materials. Special emphasis will be given to materials for components such as windows, lenses, filters, waveguides, modulators, absorbers, and AR and protective coatings for modern infrared applications (especially in the 3-5 and 10 p regions) such as high-energy laser systems, communications, imaging and scanning, solar-energy conversion, infrared detection, and spectroscopy. Deadline date for contributed papers, September 3, 1976. Information

Washington, D.C. 20036, U.S.A. 1976 Gordon Research Conferences The Gordon Research Conferences for the summer of 1976 will be held in New Hampshire and California. Purpose. The Conferences were established to stimulate research in universities, research foundations, and industrial laboratories. This purpose is achieved by any informal type of meeting consisting of scheduled speakers and discussion groups. Sufficient time is available to stimulate informal discussion among the members of each Conference. Meetings are held in the morning and in the evening. Monday through Friday, with the exception of Friday evening. The afternoons are available for recreation, reading, or participation in discussion groups. as the individual desires. This type of meeting is a valuable means of disseminating information and ideas to an extent that could not be achieved through the usual channels of publication and presentation at scientific meetings. In addition, scientists in related fields become acquainted and valuable associations are formed that often result in collaboration and cooperative efforts among laboratories.
