Tunnel Construction '90 and Drfllex '90

These conferences form part of the International Construction Equipment Exhibition (ICE '90), which will be the major international exhibition for the construction and public works industries in 1990. Organized by the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in association with the British Tunnelling Society, "Funnel Construction '90" will cover a wide range of topics, including the design, construction, maintenance, and refurbishment of tunnels for water distribution, sewerage, road, rail and metro systems. "Drilling for construction and mining" is the theme of the one-day "Drillex '90" conference, which will be devoted to drilling equipment, techniques and case histories. A technical visit to the Channel Tunnel will be included in the program. Mechanics of Jointed and and Faulted Rock

This international conference, organized by the Institute of Mechanics, Technical University Vienna, will cover new developments in the field of theoretical, experimental and numerical modelling and improvement of testing and testing equipment for rock joints and jointed and faulted media. The conference will cover all aspects of jointed and faulted rock and rock masses from geophysics/ geotectonics to engineering rock mechanics applications and fragmentation by blasting in quarries. Special emphasis will be focused on the implementation and application of new concepts and methods to modelling, analysis, building, performance control and repair of structures of and in jointed rock and rock masses. For more information write: Doz. Dr. H. P. Rossmanith, Institute of Mechanics, Technical University Vienna, Wiedner Hauptstrasse 8-10/325, A-1040 Vienna, Austria.

2rid International Conference on Engineering, Construedon, and Operations in Space

"Space 90", the Second International Conference on Engineering, Construction, and Operations in Space, will focus on the engineering, construction, and operations of facilities and bases for space and on other planetary bodies that may have continuous or intermittent human occupancy. These spaces may be located in the Earth's orbit, at a Lagrangian point, or on the surface of another planetary body such as the Moon, Mars, or the asteroids. The time scale of the conference is intended to cover the next 29 to 30 years. The conference is intended to encourage and stimulate the development and application of space to skills, expertise and techniques of engineers, builders, and operators of facilities and bases on Earth, especially those in hostile environments. Many of the lessons learned in designing, building, and operating such diverse systems as mines, tall buildings, sanitary systems, submarines, offshore drilling rigs and platforms, and Antarctic research stations are applicable to building the infrastructure in space.
