1973 AORN international symposium held in breece Educational seminars, workshops, and visits to Athens hospitals were combined with sightseeing on the fourth annual AORN international symposium, Sept 29 to Oct 14, to Greece and the Greek Islands. The travelers included 263 persons representing 35 states, Canada, the Canal Zone and Puerto Rico. Several AORN members stationed in Europe joined the group in Athens. The group flew from New York to Amsterdam, then to Athens. Educational
seminars,
held
daily
for
three days at the Royal Olympic Hotel, covered hydatic cyst, breast cancer, abortion complications, and operating room education of the graduate nurse, supervisor and technician. The surgical treatment of hydatic cyst was described by Pan Zafiracopoulos, MD, FACS. He i s director of thoracic and cardiac surgery at Pendeli General Hospital and associate professor of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the National University.
He i s a governor of the American College of Surgeons in Greece. The surgical management of breast cancer in Greece was discussed by E G Papandrianos, MD, FACS, director of surgery at Son Pantalemo Hospital. A Komninos, MD, FACS, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at National University, spoke on abortion complications. He i s director of 0 6 at Helena Maternity Hospital.
A history of nursing, and nursing in Greece was given by Miss S Papamikrouli.

She i s a member of the board of directors of the Hellenic Graduate Nurses' Association and national director of nursing, Hellenic Red Cross. A panel discussed operating room education of the graduate nurse, supervisor and technician in Greece and the US. Participants were Anna Sahini-Kardasi, Maria Tzelissi and Catherine Papadaki, Greece; Jerry Peers, executive director of AORN, Barba Edwards, AORN board member, and Lucy Jo Atkinson, director of educational services at Ethicon Inc. Providing invaluable liaison assistance in obtaining workshop speakers and arranging hospital visits was Catherine Papadaki, Greek AORN member and OR supervisor, Evangelismos Hospital, Athens. A replica of the head of Hygea, goddess of health, was presented to AORN by the Hellenic National Graduate Nurses' Association, Athens. In addition to u sightseeing tour of Athens and Corinth, the group visited the ruins of Mycenae and Epidauris.
The second half of the tour included a cruise of the Greek islands-Crete, Rhodes, Chios, Ephesus, Delos, Mykonos, Kusadasi on the coast of Turkey, and Istanbul. During a workshop aboard ship, nurses who had visited Athens hospitals described their impressions and compared OR nursing in Greece and the US. Other workshops included surgical films and discussions, and a review of parliamentary procedures for AORN members to use for more effective chapter meetings.
