The modeling of environmental systems is concerned with the mathematical description of the depletion, modification and transient pollution of the water, the land and the air environment. Environmental problems are field problems (distdbuted parameter systems) and are governed by nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations. As a class, this problem belongs to the ‘large’ field prob-

lems, characterized by uncertainties as regards geometry, field parameters (internal characteristics of the medium) and the relatively low quality of system observation. The contributions of this book emphasize these facts and illustrate how the described methods cope with these difficulties. Furthermore, whenever possible, extension of these methods to the economic and social problems are suggested. Contents: Introduction. Modeling methodology for environmental simulation (6 papers). Parameter estimation in environmental systems (8 papers). Land resources modeling (9 papers). Air resources modeling (6 papers). Water quality modeling (5 papers). Groundwater resources modeling (4 papers). Biosysterns modeling (5 papers). Thermal pollution modeling (4 papers). Watershed control (5 papers). Control of water quality (6 papers). Modeling for environmental control (8 papers). Data gathering and resource management (7 papers). Technological advances for environmental simulations (2 papers).

1979 T.B. Steel and J.M. Gallitano (Editor): Data Management System Modelling. A Proposal for a Conceptual Schema Language. North-Holland Publishing Company, Amsterdam, 1979. In Data Management System Modelling, SteeZ and Gallitano propose a language based on symbolic logic and a methodology to create conceptual schemas to describe perceived reality. Two examples of conceptual schemas for very different enterprises are given, including methods for altering the conceptual schema to accommodate real world changes or to achieve alternative methods of description. Various data models, e.g., relational, network, hierarchical are discussed. This book is essential reading for those familar, with the ANSI/X3/SPARC Study Group Report and for those interested in modelling techniques for data base management systems.
